One Piece is the GOAT but it's not about character development. It's about characters influencing the world around them. Naruto has way more character development. But that don't make it better. Character Development is not the end-all-be-all. Lycan nailed it. "Don't confuse Luffy's character development with the story of One Piece."

I heard an analysis once that I tend to agree with. One Piece is rarely about development. We see it sometimes, but often the characters are already developed so to speak. Many pivotal moments for our characters happened in the past already, and we see them through flashbacks. Instead, One Piece is more about how your character impacts the world around you. Instead of a strong world forcing the character to develop, the strong character forces the world to develop. Not saying it's a better way to do tell stories or anything. Just repeating an idea that I like.

I like Luffy as a character more than Naruto, he's in my top 3 manga protagonists. But Naruto definitely has way more development

I also think Naruto has greater Character development. Luffy has like 2-3 moments where he really matured. First was before Alabasta when Nami was sick and Vivi as a princess bowed her head to save her. Luffy does the same thing later on Fishman island. Second was on Water 7 when he fought Usopp and learned what it means to be a captain. And the last time when he lost his crew and his brother right after. He felt to weak to protect his friends so he promised to become stronger. You could even argue that Shanks loosing his arm or Sabo‘s death in ASL arc also count as Character development but I would still give it to Naruto. However, Luffy is still my fave main Character out of all the anime I have seen so far.

To summ it up, we don't know most of Luffy's development cuz we are never in his head and he doesn't talk about his feelings, he just feels them lmao. Even in the story it's weird sometimes when you see the crew interact with each other, and discovering new stuff about each other, that we, the viewers already knew ! I love Luffy but I believe his brain is mostly at a 12 years old peak aha.

I think what differentiates the both of you with other reactors is you guys go in depth with your opinions, analysis and speculation. Other reactors usually just react to the moment and explicitly state the first thoughts that come to their mind[wow, cool, amazing, never saw that coming etc]. They usually keep it light and keep the reaction of the episode going. You guys really go all in on elaborating your thoughts about how the developments unfolding impact the story. You guys also have the benefit of having a conversation[two reactors] and have good synergy bouncing ideas off and against each other which enhances the quality of discussion and entertainment value.

One Piece, the point of view for the audience is more like being part of the crew as a strawhat, you go with the whims of Luffy not knowing exactly what surprises and decisions he makes next.

There is character development and character progression Naruto has more development and luffy has more progression. Luffy and naruto have both but luffy didnt need develop his ideals like naruto had to because his dream is a lot more self centered (pirate king). But naruto had a self centered dream(to become hokage so he can have respect) and through his life as he mature as a shinobi he became a man trying find peace in the world.

I understand what y’all are saying about character development. I think Luffy has character development but The way Oda writes him it’s mostly up to how you interpret his actions. I noticed it more when rewatching certain arcs. I do agree that Naruto has more character development but it wasn’t always good, which is why I don’t have Naruto above Luffy or Ichigo.

I think luffy is the best mc and maybe he doesn't have the most development, but that's probably because he is such a solid character and I don't see how you can feel a stronger connection to naruto than luffy after watching one-piece You see how much he's a ride or die how much pain we've seen him go through but he still retains that playful attitude in my opinion luffy and naruto are both relatable but I like luffy better as a character

So I just started watching naruto and I already notice his emotional development. He doesn’t want to stay a victim his whole life bc his parents died and that’s not easy to do.. now Luffy we mainly see how he develops as a leader and captain. When Ace died he did struggle emotional and he had ppl to help remind him about his crew. But overall Luffy is not written to show off his emotional feelings like that. He doesn’t have much inner dialogue to know how he feels inside

I forget which episode exactly but there is 1 side side side Character we met for a second that made the comment of "Those eyebrows look familiar". It was never touched on again. It was a quick comment, other Characters were talking so it was instantly brushed off. Also Amenz baits Lycan into starting debates. Amenz will bring something up and then Lycan ends up wanting to prove Amenz wrong or just understand what he said more in detail and then it just goes off the rails.

Also y'all are 100% right. Luffy does not progress as a character too much lol You're also right that a lot of people hold Luffy higher because of the story. I actually watched a video recently that mentioned this. The creator said that people do this a lot because the way One Piece is structured, the characters and story are very tightly intertwined. Most characters are designed, down to their physical appearance, based on their place in the world. In Luffy's case, his development is really the development of his crew, and his political position in the world. You guys are at a point now where Luffy has a whole fleet now. In the One Piece world, this only happens because Luffy is unchanging and unmoving. It makes him not progress on a personal level, but it allows him to drastically change/develop the world around him. But yeah, it's dumb to equate that to Naruto's personal development. Naruto's development is top notch for personal character development

Answering the question at the beginning: I personally watch y'all more than other reactors for a few reasons. The main thing is that you guys pay attention to what's going on in the show, and also get in to it. Or if it's kind of a weaker part of an arc, you guys still try to give it attention until it's over and you can say for sure that it sucked. Also I think being a duo helps keep you both on your toes, especially because y'all often have different opinions or theories about things. Sometimes it leads to super long discussions, but that's a good vibe, and you guys catch more details like that. It's exactly how I'd be if I was debating a show with my friends. That's a feeling that's harder to find with a solo reaction channel. The other reason I really enjoy your content is the consistency of releases. And when stuff comes up that breaks consistency, you're quick to communicate. The communication being way more important. I'm sure almost everyone here including me is totally okay if you miss upload days here and there. But the communication keeps us in the loop so we aren't left confused and wondering when we're getting an upload. Getting those updates through patreon is huge for me too. I'm not in the discord. I don't get this level of communication with any other reactor that I'm following right now. There's a lot of other good things to say too, but those are the biggest things for me personally.

I started watching you guys when you were around Impel Down,I really appreciated the fact that you weren't acting weird about the whole Level 5.5 like many dude reactors tends too, that was refreshing, Then I kept watching you, because you have a great dynamic together. I joined one of Lycan streams for Bleach and I loved his energy. I am a 24 yo woman so sometimes you guys are a bit weird about women but whatever lmao, to each their own. As a whole I would say, you pay attention to the story-building, and your debates are hilarious !

What sort of character development do you guys think Luffy needs to compete with Naruto? I think Luffy's development is really subtle and comes in his decision making, but he's definitely not a changed man or anything in the way Naruto is after he goes through some shit. The Major Development for Luffy was after Ace died. However it didn't develop him in the way people watching would think. Luffy feels that because he ran away from many strong foes, that that was the wrong thing to do, and he should have faced them head on. He said it when he was fighting Fugitora at the end of Dressrossa, that he will stop running like he did in the past. Many of the Fan base sees this more as a regression of the character as apposed to development, because the reason Ace died was because of his refusal to back down from a fight. They don't see how Luffy's mindset is like that, but if you think about it, Luffy's sees it as if he fought all the strong foes head on instead of running, that he could have saved Ace.

At the moment Naruto has had greater character growth than luffy but luffy has greater character depth(aka more fleshed out and highlighted) personality than naruto. I think the meaning of the term ‘character development’ is open to interpretation, let me know if I’m wrong on that though(about the definition of character development, not the luffy&naruto stuff).

Yeah i like how you guys are real, but more really how genuine you guys are and that you give positive vibes in the majority of all the time you’re on camera. On the one piece side which is also the second big thing I watch you guys for is how invested you are in and how much attention you pay/read in to the story. You guys make fun at one piece and oda and laugh at the goofy bits but you also really care about the story and actually recognise oda’s writing genius(at least that’s what I’ve picked up from whenever you’re talking about/focusing on the story). The thing about Luffy is that his character is almost the same since chapter 1. Most of the strawhats are the same too. They develop early and stay the same but they are changing the world around them as we follow the story. I think Oda's writing style is more focus on how the story(new characters) will interact with these developed characters rather than develop them more. If anyone have more thoughts let's here them =)
