Arthur is extremely scarred from his childhood. All this make believe knight stuff of his is basically a mental illness that started off as an escape from his shitty reality. He can't just stop and "be serious". Thats like telling someone with depression to "just be happy". Childhood trauma can really fuck up someone who is now an adult.
