I completely disgaree with Amenz about Garp, but I think it's also important to note that Garp is being a little bit naive here. He's assuming that they're executing Ace just because he became a pirate and that this wouldn't have happened had he become a marine instead. It's pretty likely that as soon as they found out that Ace was Roger's son, they would have found any pretense they could to execute him. The sins of the father are literally being visited by the son, which is exactly what Roger wanted to avoid. They would have executed the man for avoiding taxes, if they could have. That still doesn't make it Garp's fault, and I think he feels far too much personal guilt about Ace's upbringing, but I suppose that's just part of the nuance that Oda had tried to construct in this narrative.

Amenz is justified in fellingthe way he does, i felt the same way went a first watch it and i think that it's supposed to make fell that way now and later on with more garp interactions I got the felling that there was something grater that just the marines behind his actions. People that said garp doesn't help ace because of his job as a marine are wrong, there's plenty of subtex to idicated that the situation its way more complex than that.

That's not garp whole story, there's alot more that we don't know, and all the sacrifices that he has made are not for the marines or the world government. He has a greater purpose.

God I hate to be that person, but it is so much better in the manga too. That double page spread is one of my favorites. The anime didn't do it any kind of justice.

I actually think Garp's story is a pretty sad one. He sacrifices his whole life and all his family relationships to hold down a job keeping order for lying murderers who couldn't care less for him or anyone else. And in the end he doesn't get anything out of it. It's kind of tragic.

I mean your argument would hold more water if we ever saw Ace do anything terrible throughout the series. The only crime that the World Government charges him with is his very existence. Garp isn't upholding any real sense of justice or good by standing by while his grand-kid is about to be murdered.

so here’s an example for you. you have a grandfather that is a police officer & you get in trouble with the law as a grown man do you expect your grandfather to come save you because he’s a police officer?

Hey amenz I do understand but that "leading by example" or "making up a scenario" wasn't the best way to go at tit because as far as the example I mean he's the hero of the navy and the making up the scenario so he understand the repercussions of being a pirate, well ace's is an orphan because his parent was a pirate. I understand what your saying that garp should have been more a better parent but he is a marine. He goes away on duty, and he needs to make money. Also, garp is very passionate about his job, he is the “good justice”. Ace and luffy turning out to be pirates is partly his fault but they both made that choice. They wanted to be free, you can’t blame garp for that because he tried to discipline them. Also, I know you want him to save ace but what you’re trying to say is he should tolerate a criminal? Garp is conflicted between duty and family.

yeah the whole reason Garp wanted them to be a marine is to avoid situations like this. He is high in the navy and he knew them becoming pirates meant he was going to have to capture them one day.
