I think part of the problem with people hating on Garp is that they don't consider his role and his identity as a marine, and they're biased towards Ace and Luffy. It's not like he isn't conflicted, and it's definitely not as simple as "he's family, so you have to save him no matter what". Didn't all the other criminals that Garp sentenced to death have families and friends that cared for them? If Garp were the type of person to throw away years of commitment to justice, he never would have made it to being the type of person who could have been an admiral.

Out of the many people I've seen watch One Piece for their first time IRL and online, I've never experienced someone with such a strong hate for Garp. It's surprising and unfortunate! Especially when he ain't do nothing wrong 🤔

I was curious so I looked up some stuff and counting this episode it's been 10 episodes since Roger was revealed to be Ace's dad. Amenz called Garp a sellout in 459 judging people's comments so yeah lol. To yall it might seem like it hasn't happened much but to us viewers yeahhhhhhh we can hear the Garp slander like every episode lol. My only comment on the Garp stuff is similar to what everyone else has said. Everyone has a different idea of what it means to be "family" and in this world theirs is just different from Amenz's. I mean Garp, Ace, they consider each other grandpa and grandson and yet they're still understanding of Garp's position. To Amenz he feels he shouldn't call himself Ace's grandpa but to Ace, the dude who's arms are locked up like Akon, he still considers Garp his grandpa because his idea of family is different. You can have family and they all not act the same as your dad. Like Ace said in the flashback a few episodes ago, he told Luffy that they'll go on to be pirates who live to be more free than everyone else. Ace doing this is living his free life. Sure, to you Garp should be trying to save him but that not only goes against Garp's ideals, it goes against Ace's as well. He doesn't want anyone saving him right now including Luffy, Whitebeard and his bros. Tbh Garp is the only one who's doing something similar to what Ace wants as wild as that is. But yeah just my opinion on that. Yall be good. Look forward to the next ones.

Bro, I understand your opinion about Garp, but take into account that Garp, of all your examples of people who sacrifice something for the sake of a loved one, Garp is the only one from the Marines, he is a hero of the Marines, he is the face of the Marines, he fought against "evil" for decades. And with all that, he has the hope that Ace will be rescued without his contribution. This is not only in One Piece, there were such cases in many movies, and I even know such examples in life. For such people, this is not just work and rank, this is everything they believe in. And turning against it all would have looked very childish of Garp. He is not 20, not 30, or even 40 years old. Garp is a symbol of the watch, this is a veteran who fought the most terrible pirate Gold Roger. I can understand your opinion, but Whitebeard and Garp have too different situations to compare them.
