The reason should already be obvious at this point why, his son already betrayed him, his step son, Ace, would be killed in normal circumstances anyway due to his dad, but if he became a marine, the grandson of GARP, NONE of this would've happened. Same with Luffy, son of a heinous criminal, and becomes a criminal himself, Garp has tried 3x to do right and its gone wrong each time, I get my Lycan but saying "family family family" means jack shit, blood CAN betray you, and you'll forgive them, but you aren't a legendary general of an Army, whos ALREADY had one son betray him. The context is literally all in front of us already. I think peoples frustration with his understanding was that, you should already understand the mans not a complete villain, we are acting like Ace has never done wrong in the past or that pirates dont rape, pillage, murder, or try to take over entire countries, peoples shadows, etc. Garp has fought these people since before Dragon was even born...not liking him is fine but for his reason to be "Its family you back them", let your son and two grandons go on the opposing side, opposing you, and your friends(sengoku,tsuru etc), and try saying "but its family" .

(Spoiler free) I feel like in the future when we know more about Garp and Dragon's relationship, we will understand Garp's perspective. Answering the questions like, why was he hell bent on Luffy and Ace becoming marines? Why is he a marine? Why did his own son (Dragon) become the enemy of the marines? Why doesn't he try to stop Dragon? We will all see things differently then we do now.

I 100% agree with you for 1st tome watchers your going to think he’s the strongest but when you’ve been with the series for a long time you see things differently I don’t even think he’s top 5 strongest in this arc due to sickness

its also the scaling, marineford is huge and the platform where Ace is, is the highest point and is visible from any point so it sometimes would look as if Luffy is right beneath it when hes not

I do understand the depth perception thing, but you have to remember luffy’s been pushed back a lot from where he started everytime he advances. Like when kizaru kicked him or when mihawk stalled him. You have to remember that they aren’t letting them get past them that quicm that is why we always see them running and running but only slowly getting closer.
