I first read this chapter at 14 when it first came out. It was straight up traumatizing. I had to wait 5 years before I was ready to re-read Marineford because of this. Ace's death is genuinely the most heart-breaking thing I've ever experienced in fiction.

Ace and Luffy are very different in "where they come from". In terms of identity, self worth etc. Ace grew up constantly questioning whether he deserved to have been born. To someone like that...being given a true sense of acceptance and belonging in the world (in this world - as in not just kids practically "hiding" in the mountains ISOLATED from the world)....imagine the appreciation you would feel towards that person. Like...there's a reason Ace TRULY sees Whitebeard as his father and doesn't just call him that because everyone is calling him that. He was never going to let anyone insult or disrespect Whitebeard. That's why he went after Blackbeard although Whitebeard told him to let it go. And that's why he went after Akainu although everyone told him to let it go. He just couldn't let it go. And - considering where Ace comes from (and his personality that is somewhat because of that).....it never truly was a choice

i dont know if anyone has said this before but Ivan's hormonesshot he gave to luffy is basically a shot of adrenaline, it doesn't heal you at all. iirc since his wound was open it would've made him bleed out faster and would've killed him faster that's why. But i understand where you coming from that you wanna do everything and anything to save Ace but i think Ivan knew it would've been worse for him.

Unless you were a manga reader when it first came out, having Ace's death spoiled for you after 100 episodes is just part of the One Piece journey. Sad but true. Comments can be great but man those people suck.

Partly from his limited screen time and partly from being spoiled years ago, Ace's death doesn't hit me nearly as hard as Luffy's grief in that last moment (and Luffy's cry breaks me EVERY time). It's obvious who I pity more, and it isn't the one with the peaceful smile on his face, RIP. I think Oda intended this; Ace is supposed to matter to Luffy more, Luffy loves Ace more than we do. You can feel sorry about Ace but Luffy's the one who's dying in my opinion.

I think we all agree he should've ignored but the fact that he didn't shows his character flaw which makes him to me more believable and a better character. Some will call him trash for that reason and I understand the person Ace can be "trash" but not the character. After all he was only trying to defend his father who risked everything for him one last time, how was he supposed to know Akainu would wreck him LIKE that. Akainu even said Ace was way too confident and it cost him his life. That makes for good characters man, the best characters are flawed and not protected by plot. Ace's writing was too deep and it gets better after his death

I only felt sad for Ace's death because of Luffy, he brought his death to himself, if he only had run like everyone was saying he would've escape, but no, Akainu only said a "Yo daddy" joke and he got himself killed, completely wasting Whitebeard's sacrifice, the countless of death in vain trying to save his ass and Luffy's hard work trying to get to him, just how much of Luffy's lifespan was lost and it was all for nothing.

This is a great reaction, it got amenz, I was kinda thinking about this because ace is his favorite character. This is tough man, this is luffy’s biggest tragedy, the hardest part is luffy went through everything just to save ace but still failed to do so. This arc is great but also very heartbreaking. Also I understand what you saying about ace should have known better. But i think you need to understand ace’s personality a little bit more. He is just stubborn, he was overconfident and wanted to take a shot at akainu. It just happens that akainu is stronger than him. There are people like that, who bites more than they could chew, and sometimes some people were able to pull it off but most of the time they dont. That’s what happened to ace. On top of that ace was very emotional at this time, his pops was about to sacrifice himself and being a hot headed guy, he got played by akainu.

What's even sadder is that Luffy went from Hell and back because Impel Down is considered Hell over there, almost died of poison from Magellan, got 10 years of his life took away so that he can recover from the poison, Bon Chan sacrificing his life so that they can escape, and after all of that, they finally got Ace free and then ultimately was killed in front of him by Akainu and died in Luffy's arms saying my one regret is not seeing you become the pirate king and thank you for loving me. Oh great now I'm even more sad just talking about it!

This stuff is heavy. I pretty much said everything I wanted in my comment on the other post. The only thing I'll add is that I don't think Luffy is as hot headed as Ace is about insults. Luffy has shown now that he takes after Shank's way of doing things where he'll let people say whatever they want, and focus on the fights that really matter. But once someone endangers a friend or family member, that's when they jump in to action. I'm not sure if Luffy would do anything AFTER Ace dies though. Not sure what his stance on revenge is

in Ace s defence Whitebeard had JUST sacrifice everything for him, it s a bit deeper than "your mom gay" bait when a random who never met your parent insults them as they are peacefully cooking cookies at home. After all Whitebeard did the least Ace could ve done was defend his honour one last time and even if it was an error in judgement MAD respect. Only as a kid I thought "Ace is so dumb he had one job", but now I understand a lot better why it makes sense that it happened this way

Look at it this way, Ace was basically Luffy without plot armour. He did not think that Akainu would over power him like that, probably got confidence clashing with Aokiji. Son of Gold Roger, adoptive son of Whitebeard, with him alive narratively it would make no sense for him not to become the next pirate king, Oda had to write him off. Excellent piece of fiction, so many lessons, I'm excited for you guys to learn more about Ace's lore

Also I think Ivan didn't do anything because he didn't want to give Luffy false hope. He could tell that there is 0 chance for a miracle. And I don't think his power can heal people. His power boosted Luffy immune system to fight the poison. Your immune system can fight viruses etc. but it isn't gonna help you regenerate missing organs.

What hits me the most is when you think about all the sacrifices luffy made and everything he went through. He literally snuck into impel down, went down all 5 levels WITHOUT rest, survived near death, escaped LOST BON CHAN and got injected twice by the hormone which reduces your life span. He sacrificed so much only to lose what he was fighting for. Luffy has literally just taken the biggest L you can imagine it's so painful!

I love luffys reaction to this. Because One Piece is this world of insanely resilient people, they're insanely hard to kill, even when people explode they're still alive, and luffy has always saved people as long as he was there, he felt he could do something and never experienced a proper loss, typical Shonen hero am I right? But the fact that he lost the person closest to him, despite him being there and trying everything to save him, he still fails. He just completely breaks because his brain can't handle it.
