Some think it's farfetched but I'm of the mind that Oda gave us so many fake out deaths (Pell, the Shandians, Pagaya) in order to put people in a false sense of security to make these deaths more surprising and mean more cause there aren't any fake out deaths that I can remember post-timeskip
