Maki isnt intentionally trying to fool people with her grade, her family actively tries to spite her by having the association not promote her to a higher grade. Mai was forced to be the heir of their family so she needed to be a jujutsu sorcerer too. If Maki had stayed she would probably have been a servant or advisor.
