You already know suiryu since you've seen all the episodes and maybe even the manga. Remember this was still a new character to him in this reaction. Also the fact that he felt bad means he actually cares about the character. It was only during the moment that he ran that he stopped caring but eventually felt sorry when he was being tortured by the monster. You just gotta wait a little bit thats all.

He got to see what it means to be a hero compaired to someone who is just a martial artist for an easy life.
