Whitebeard is pops to everyone, but it really shows how much he likes Oden because instead of son he calls him brother. As much as he liked him at first though he was resisting because he saw Oden as too selfish to be part of a crew, but then when he witnessed Oden giving up his ambition to save someone he didn't even know he knew he could trust Oden to be selfless when it really mattered. Maybe because of Oden's free spirit and strength to back it up is why Whitebeard saw him instead as brother. Someone who he could trust and welcome into his family, but that also didn't need to be looked after and protected as one of his kids.
