The thing is remember Luffy and the Strawhats are different Pirates. Rodger and them didn't get involved until provoked. If Oden didn't leave for that final trip nothing would have been set up. Sometimes selfishness is for a good reason. Look at wrestlers, the ones that weren't deadbeats sacrificed a lot of the time with their kids. Oden was gonna come back, there are worst L fathers in anime. They are Pirates, they don't need to do anything.

2022-08-03 10:36:28 +0000 UTCI don't think Oden was being that selfish. Selfish yes, but not to the degree that it makes him a horrible person for what he did. While he had the idea that some things had changed and they could use his help, he was assuming that these things were much less severe than they really were. Remember when Oden formed his team of people they were basically a roaming band of misfits, who then conquered a town of delinquents, and made it into a more habitable region. Oden was constantly loaning out money even when he was there to Orochi when they barely had enough coin, so they were already relatively poor. Wano is also an isolationist country so the assumption is that no one would be in Wano besides the people of the country, and Oden knew he was basically the strongest person in the whole country. He also asked first when he got back how his father was, assuming that he was still alive and shogun. So as far as Oden knew, the problems could not be that bad or dangerous, because any dangerous problem he should be able to solve himself, and how bad could any other problems really be if his dad is the shogun? The land of Wano changed more in the few years that Oden was gone than it had in centuries. To us the viewers that know everything, we think "hey you should've brought Rayleigh along for backup" but he has no reason to assume things are THAT bad. At the very least, it may have been better had Kinemon told Oden "set sail, but when you come back, bring extra help" or something to that effect.
