Daily Discussion + Jackary Archives Day 201 (Summer Lucina)

Today's Archives image is a 2021 piece of Lucina enjoying some time on the beach!

Daily Discussion

Two questions today:

I had an interesting conversation earlier with a friend about styles, line weight, faces, etc, and it made me reflect on my own style and how it's changed. I'm curious to know:

1) Of the various styles I've drawn my art in, which is your favorite?

Example - thin lines versus thick lines, detailed versus simpler rendering, etc

2) Do you prefer when I draw faces that are more Disney-like, more anime, or somewhere in between?

Here's an image of various artworks of mine, for reference, though it doesn't capture my full range of style. Feel free to name a specific drawing you like if it helps to answer these questions!

And secondly, are there any questions you'd like me to ask in future Daily Discussion prompts?

One reason I'm doing these is because I've run out of bandwidth to meaningfully interact with people on social media, so it's easier having a dedicated space where I dedicate that energy. Of the people I want to get to know better, it's my Patrons, so let me know if there's anything that you think would make for a fun discussion topic.

I’m always particular about the fully rendered style so I’d say that’s my vote As for the faces, I’m honestly not sure what I like most. Gerudo Zelda imo is the pinnacle “Jackary” face, and that’s the one that made me love your work, but I do still like the Anime style faces, so it’s really hard to pinpoint my favourite

I've drawn three Purahs now so I might need to narrow that down 😅 are you talking about the one that's shown in the example image?

My favorite is your drawing of Purah, with a mix of thin and thick lines.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know enough about the nuts and bolts of art to give you a meaningful answer. But the casual Zelda in the triforce t-shirt was what made me subscribe here. Lol. And I’m loving the new casual Peach. I love that style

You draw Zelda, and good things happen. I'd say your artwork is a spectrum of princessy to anime, and I think my favorite pieces (goth Aerith, Purah, Gerudo Zelda, Daisy, Thighza) land somewhere in between. Tsunade and Lucina are a bit more toward the angular anime side of things and reminiscent of 90's anime, but you get toward Gerudo-Zelda and you've landed on my favorite anime:princess ratio. I think what stands out the most in your style is complexity of layers and textures, and body style.

1. Honestly I think my preference varies with the mood of the piece. I really like the face and hair done in the recent updated casual Peach. Thick lines work for a soft, cutsey work while thin lines work for something more moody or serious, less casual so to say. The tummy rendering has always been on point fr! 2. I have no specific idead, I like talking and getting to know you, you're a cool person and honestly I just like talking. Also I'm just an open book and will answer anything so im not super helpful here eithere 😅

I'm not one to quibble over the amount of rats in my hotdogs. I really couldn't tell you any specifics about your style that I like or dislike. Small adjustments can sometimes propagate into big changes in the feel of a piece. If you were providing something practical, I might tell you that the angle of the armrest is off, or the mouse is so small that I feel like I'm playing with a child's teacup. For art though, I just look at it and think its a tasty hotdog... Where was I going with this? Tharja and goth Zelda are my favorites. Crap. I found it. My head went to hotdogs because of that "what question should I ask question", and I immediately went to... Was it Van Wilder? Some movie set in a college where a guy went around in a hotdog costume shouting "Ask me about my Weiner!" Hope this helps. Or gets a laugh. Preferably the latter.

Oof, I can't give an answer to which style I prefer, because I've always been enamored by how your use of shadows, and how you draw fabrics. Not to mention your uncanny ability to make skin look incredibly soft! As far as the faces go, for me, that's a part of a whole. Does the piece call for a more anime style face, or a more western style of face? Typically speaking, that would be the one, for me. Can you draw the little mermaid in the style of, like, Naruto? Probably! If that's something you're going for in a piece, than the rest of the piece will reflect that! I'm also approaching this from my circle of art; music. If a song calls for a heavy drum beat with tons of fill, go for it. If it just needs a simple rhythm, that's all it needs (I played guitar, so me picking drums is even more "me talking about things I only have adjacent knowledge of"). In the end, it's all about what the piece your making needs, and I believe that, of the two face styles you offered, you can do both pretty damn well! And I'm more of a 1:1 conversation kind of person, so I'm probably not the best person to ask for conversation topics to apply to a whole room, but it's hard not to have a conversation about genres of things across movies, games, tabletops, whatever, when the crowd is a bunch of people interested in a person's drawings! Oh! How's the woodworking going??
