Happy Switch 2 reveal day! It was anticlimactic because of all the leaks, but it makes me reflect fondly on previous console hype cycles.
Here are the discussion questions for today; you can answer either one or both!
1. What are your opinions on the Switch 2 so far?
2. What’s the most fun hype cycle you’ve ever experienced for a new console, from pre-reveal to release?

1. Switch 2 is exactly what I expected so far- bigger console, more powerful than the Switch, and there's a new Mario Kart game for it. Pretty happy with it so far. 2. Most fun console hype cycle? IMO, there are no fun console hype cycles, consoles either take too long between announcement and reveal, or there's other consoles coming out around the same time and console wars/fans arguing over them sucks the fun out. In the Switch 2's case, everyone knew it was coming and was waiting a loooong time for Nintendo to say something.

2025-01-17 18:59:04 +0000 UTCThe Wii in the long run ended up being my least favorite Nintendo console, but the hype cycle for it was unforgettable and it’s definitely my answer for this question. I was only just getting started with the internet the year GameCube came out, so I was just barely too late to be plugged into the rumor mill for that one, but the hype leading up to the Wii was INSANE, beginning with the fact that it was known as the mysterious codename “Revolution” and we all suspected some game-changing gimmick was coming, and we had no idea what. I loved the 00’s era message board culture, as well as all the outrageous concept mockups that people made of the “Revolution.” Some of them looked so futuristic! And then of course the Wii was revealed and Nintendo fanboy that I am, I thought it would CHANGE EVERYTHING, when in retrospect we now know that the Wiimotes weren’t the “revolution” we quite expected them to be 😅 But man amplify all this by the fact that this was all happening in the time leading up to the launch of Twilight Princess, which had OBSCENE levels of hype which was amplified by endless delays, and it was a fun time to be a Nintendo fanboy haha. My second favorite console hype cycle would be Switch. We were all wondering where Nintendo was going to go after blowing it with the Wii U. The moment I saw the Switch, I knew they were back, and I knew instantly that it was going to be a knockout success. I’m thankful I was right. Oh, and who can forget them ending the original Switch games reveal with that legendary BOTW trailer?

2025-01-17 18:50:57 +0000 UTCThe Nintendo fanboy in me would have really loved Super Nintendo Switch, but the Marketing Executive in me knows that Switch 2 is the right choice haha Although it’s boring, I don’t think there’s a single better thing they could have named it to ensure financial success

2025-01-17 18:35:53 +0000 UTCI'm excited for the Switch 2. Not sure I'll get it, but if I do it'll be a while before then. My favorite hype cycle was leading up to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Absolutely loved the originals and could not have been more excited for them

The lead up to Smash Bros Melee was the most excited I’ve ever been for a video game. Found every teeny tiny bit of coverage I could for it. And it did not disappoint

Honestly I'm having a hard time getting hyped for the Switch 2. It somehow looks more uncomfortable to hold than the Switch 1, especially the accessory to make the joycons a "controller". The handles arent rounded so thats just a sharp edge digging into your hand. I can see the connector pins snapping or breaking really easily too so hope the fix that. Also the logo on the dock looks ugly imo. Im still going to buy it because I have a console collecting problem, and im sure ill be more excited the closer we get and the more is revealed. 2. I honestly cant really remember, but probably either the 3DS because I absolutley adored my DS, or even the original Switch. Side note, I really hope this is Mario Kart 9 and not New Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Plus Ultra Extreme now available with 24 racers

Not because of the leaks, but just because I wasn’t expecting too drastic of a change between consoles As for console hype? I’m honestly not sure. Only now have I been keeping track of the new consoles, so I don’t really have any crazy stories of hype with a new system

2025-01-17 04:43:01 +0000 UTCI mean yeah, leaks, but from a "majority of the audience" perspective, this is exactly what they needed to hear. Some of the biggest issues possibly addressed, their libraries aren't being abandoned, the first Mario Kart in a decade. It's a good foot to start one. As for most exciting console? Most of my life I wasn't in an income bracket to get consoles at launch, so they weren't always as exciting right away for me. Nowadays I'm just kinda jaded, with a small window of joy in the middle, lol. Three instances do come to mind though: the absolutely insane launch of the Wii cause trying to help my friends track one down was nuts, the "How to share games on PS4" E3 bit that completely dumpstered Microsoft's console domination dreams, and the actual Switch reveal itself, because holy crap they *actually* did it
