This was definitely a good upgrade and character development for renji. Before this he couldn't compete with any captain and couldn't fight any of the main group villain 1v1. The sternritter are stronger than the Espada at least most of them are and for renji to beat him at a low diff caliber is honestly great. I think his development would've been better if byakuya did die in the first invasion since it was always his dream to surpass byakuya. This would've been the moment that he finally did.
