This one is a complicated one, The idea of making creature based on Stained Glass already causing a headache when I started to think about the coloring process. Added to that is my brain decided, in order to get the 'chapel' and 'stained glass' feels, I need a bigger canvas with wider shoot to give the grandiose atmosphere.
If you look at the PSD files you'll see me using far more layers compared to the usual. This is because to make sure the main subject, which is the Glass Weaver at the front, to pop out compared to the busy and colorful background, I need to separate everything into their each segment. One of the trick I use to make the Glass Weaver pop out is to give a layer of 'mist' to everything else around and behind it, these layer with screen mode gets thicker and thicker as it goes further into the background to give a depth effect.
By letting the Glass Weaver's shape to be the only one uninterrupted by the glaring light and screen layer, I'm hopping to separate it from the background. But not too much, that's why I still give some screen layer around its back where there are not many object that would disturb the shape.
I was thinking of making the web a bit more opaque and solid, but then when I tried doing that, it cover the person behind it fail to show that this is in between book on the shelf and the person is far larger than the creature. But thankfully, I think It works well to create the glass effect.
Another trick that I use to separate the objects and background is by using different color ambiance for the person and the creature. I use complementary color of blue-green and orange-yellow. The person is hit by the orange light from the sun while the creature are illuminated by the surrounding bluish green crystal.
