WIP - Abyss

Finally, I'm working on the Abyss prompt!
Well, when I get this prompt, the main idea that I want to try is to make a dark page (Not edgy dark, but actually dark) and use white lineart to draw most of the creature. That's still very much the plan here. I'm considering adding a humanoid with diving apparatus and magical shield that will illuminate some part of the creature and also as a size comparison.
But as usual, I'm kinda stuck on what to choose from these alternatives. They have kinda similar element of design, mainly the multi-color translucent 'petals' or 'frills', and kinda flower shape design. I want to make something alien but also magnificent and beautiful.
The first idea that popped up in my head is the beholder kin. Since I imagine how terrifying it'll be if you dive 10 km under the sea while relying on water breathing and magical barrier spell or arcane based diving suit, only to meet a creature that can dispel them.
It later develop into something that has similar concept, but not outright a beholder. In the second page I try to make it into a crustacean with similar ability or maybe ability to increase pressure around a certain point or area. Suddenly encountering a cliff or field filled with such creature that gradually starting to open up their 'flower' and increase the pressure to the point that it start to cause crack on your shield/barrier also sounds terrifying~
for both concept, I'm planning to make a trench where a dimensional rift to the outer plane opened a bit and causing the surrounding creature and environment to change.
While the last alternative is the classic 'sea serpent' concept. Instead of a serpent/snake, I want to make it based on a wyvern and cross the element of moray eel, crustacean (lobster or shrimp), and jelly fish.

PS : there's a possibility that I might suddenly come up with a new alternative, if I do, I'll add the new sketches here later.

it seems that my first idea often work the best XD I think I'll try tweakin that 1-B design a bit more, majority here seems to take a liking to that one (and it's warming up on me)

2021-08-16 05:01:56 +0000 UTC1-B and 4-C are my favorites. The monstrous dark flower design of 1-B really strikes a cord and 4-C has just a really creepy vibe. I lean towards 1-B though because of that mixture of darkness and flower design

I feel that a 'flower field' of those crustaceans would be a good composition to tackle. while the C-wyvern could be creepily crawling on the ocean floor surrounding the poor researcher in their diving apparatus. I think I will try tweaking those two a bit further later.

2021-08-15 15:57:01 +0000 UTCPage 3 B has a lot of creepy crustacean energy, super sinister deep sea coral almost. For the wyvern designs, C again hits that creepy warped feeling perfectly.
