Speartember Day 13 - Beast
Weapon (glaive), Legendary (require attunements)
—----------
This gruesome 'weapon' is a living creature, born from a portion of Frahagil’s intestine, repurposed by one of the Chaos-Touched generals of the Children of One during the 2nd Chaos Insurgency. Commonly referred to as the Voracious Voulge, historical records suggest it answers to the name “Vivi,” likely given to it by its original owner. Similar to a mimic, Vivi can alter its appearance to resemble an object, though it is limited to mimicking a mundane polearm.
By nature, Vivi behaves like a ferocious beast, but once it forms a symbiotic bond with its wielder, it becomes fiercely protective, doing its best to keep its host alive. It will even follow basic commands, though its obedience has limits. The wielder can, however, tap into its feral nature by feeding it their own life force, awakening its insatiable hunger. In this awakened state, much like Frahagil, the creature’s power grows stronger with every foe it consumes.
Currently, Vivi is contained in Vault 4 of The Grand Library.
—----------
You must make a DC 15 Animal Handling to attune to this weapon. On a failed check, you can’t attune to it until you take a short rest. While attuned to this weapon, you gain a bonus to attack and damage rolls with it equal to half your proficiency bonus (rounded down).
Ferocious Awakening. As an action, you can expend 1d4+1 Hit Dice to awaken the weapon's ferocity for 1 minute. When you do, the weapon's reach increases by 5 feet. Roll the expended Hit Dice and add the total to the weapon's Hunger Pool . While the weapon is in its awakened form, you can use it to grapple creatures of Large size or smaller.
When you hit a creature with a melee attack using Voracious Voulge, you can use a bonus action to initiate a grapple with the creature. You use your Strength (Athletics) check for the grapple, adding the bonus to attack rolls that you gain from this weapon. The creature contests this with its Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics). While grappled in this way, the creature takes 1d8 piercing damage at the start of each of its turns, and you can only use the weapon to attack the grappled creature.
Hunger Pool. Whenever you deal slashing or piercing damage with Voracious Voulge to a living creature while it’s awakened, add the damage dealt to its Hunger Pool. The Hunger Pool resets to 0 at the end of the duration.
As the Hunger Pool reaches certain thresholds, the weapon gains additional abilities:
At 50 Points—Ravenous Strike. The weapon deals an extra 1d6 piercing damage on a hit.
At 100 Points—Voracious Grasp. The damage dealt to grappled creatures increases to 2d6.
At 150 Points—Predatory Onslaught. Once on your turn, when you hit a creature or when a creature starts its turn grappled by the weapon, you can force it to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier). On a failed save, the creature is frightened of you until the start of your next turn.
At 200 Points—Devouring Maw. You can expend 50 points from the Hunger Pool to make a special attack. As an action, make a melee weapon attack. On a hit, the attack deals an extra 4d8 necrotic damage, and you regain hit points equal to half the damage dealt.
Living Weapon. Voracious Voulge is a sentient chaotic neutral weapon that uses the mimic stat block (SRD, p.220) with the following modifications: The weapon can only change into a mundane glaive and has a walking speed of 20 feet when not being carried. The weapon is friendly only to you. When you're not holding it, it can move on its own, staying within 30 feet of you and acting to protect you if necessary. Its symbiotic nature makes it difficult to part with; if you attempt to discard it, you must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be compelled to keep it. Forcibly removing the weapon may cause it to become hostile toward you.
Self-Preservation. If you are incapacitated, it can use your body to take actions and reactions. It uses your statistics for attack and damage rolls, its own traits, and features, but it can’t use your features until you’re no longer incapacitated.
