I know you’ve already finished the series, so this is commentary coming too late, but—regarding your frustration with the River reveal, I think it’s important to remember that this series was intended to have 22 episodes per season, which automatically sets pacing differently than what folks are used to with 10-episode streaming series today. Also, the creator started it with 7 seasons in mind for the overall story. It helps to have patience. It’s a little wild to expect major plot points to be revealed after just a handful of episodes, at least regarding pre-streaming era television series.

After the show and movie there was a theory a lot of people had about what his backstory was, but I think it was proven wrong, because I believe there is a comic called Serenity: The Shepard's Tale that talks about his backstory.
