Hello everyone!
It’s been a while since my last update. After taking a brief hiatus to learn Blender and Unity for world-building in Cluster, I’m back to the grind on PMTS. While the break was helpful for expanding my skills for future projects, it also slowed down progress here. I’d like to give you all a thorough update on what’s been happening behind the scenes and what’s next.
Editing Delays: My initial goal was to have up to Chapter 15 edited and integrated into the game by the end of the year. Unfortunately, progress has been slower than anticipated. Currently, one editor has returned five chapters, and another only one. Given the back-and-forth review process (Editor 1 ➔ My Revisions ➔ Editor 2 ➔ Final Fixes ➔ Game Integration), I’m a bit behind schedule. I do not blame my editors, life happens. I'm also behind on releasing my scripts to them.
Live2D Art Challenges: My plan to enhance character models has hit a few unexpected snags:
The face-forward view, while quicker to draw, has proven difficult to rig compared to the usual 3/4 angle.
Sarah’s character isn’t rigging as well as I’d like, particularly her hair, which I can’t quite get to look as adorable as in the demo.
I’ve encountered outfit transition issues between scenes, which affects pacing. I’m testing solutions but may go for individual models per outfit to improve fluidity.
Due to these challenges, I’m considering shifting the models back to a 3/4 view for ease of rigging. This change would offer:
Improved Animation: The 3/4 view is more compatible with the rigging tools, allowing for smoother movement without excessive reworking.
Faster Loading and Safer Assets: By creating smaller, individual models for each outfit, loading times will decrease, and assets will be less vulnerable to being used improperly if extracted from the game.
I’m re-evaluating how to release the chapters, possibly with an “alpha” testing phase where completed chapters can be released for early feedback once they’re edited. This alpha phase would not contain voice acting, may not have music or audio, and could have incomplete artwork. While I’m still weighing options, this approach could allow for feedback sooner while the project wraps up, and gives back to the patreon members without having to wait for the final release.
Despite the setbacks, I’m steadily advancing! I’m on Chapter 31, with around four or five more chapters left to finish the main storyline. With some time now freed up for writing (thanks to Maple’s training program), I aim to complete the main plot soon—IBS and migraines willing. Side chapters will follow, but they’re optional reads, so the main narrative can come together in a focused way. Editor 2 is also aiming to send back more chapters by year’s end or early next year, which is promising for keeping things moving.
Additionally, I’ve been working on a song for the game! After drafting it with some AI assistance, I’m currently reaching out to singers. The song has become a favorite of mine, so I’m excited to find it a place in the game.
