It has been a while since I have enjoyed putting on character motions lately. This wave rarely comes, so I will complete everything before it goes away.

As a matter of fact, around March I was at a loss because I couldn't solve a problem with a scene I had created a long time ago. I've been working on this project for 10 years, so it would be strange if I didn't have a problem. It was some sort of 3dsmax bug.

Specifically (and I know most people won't get the specifics), when you instance an animation layer, the data gets corrupted and you can't copy poses from one layer to another.

In the scenes I produce, I create multiple animation layers and string them together. By separating each layer, I can brush up on each cut as a non-destructive structure. The final step is to copy the poses at the transition time between the animation layers to create a series of movements.

At the end of April I managed to develop a script to repair it. We can't prevent the problem, but we can always restore it to normal (pause copying is possible).

You might think that the 3dsmax animation feature is a piece of crap, but it is a very nice system if you can look past those little bugs. It used to be a plugin (back in 3dsmax 6, I believe), and Autodesk bought it, but after a few updates left the bugs behind. Because they wanted me to buy MotionBuilder, a separate character animation software ($2,000).

This is one of the reasons I don't want to pay for a new version of 3dsmax. There are many more, though.
