2020-07-08 17:56:17 +0000 UTCHow much mass in the Starship is comprised of fore and aft flaps, with actuators and in the heat shielding? Thinking of a set of Starships dedicated as orbital tank farm. Strip the Starship of all return mass, and convert remaining starship into two tanks - LOX and LCH4. PLus plumbing. controls, thrusters for orbit keeping. These are grouped/coupled together as repository for tankers from Earth and are the fuel stop for outbound Starships. Advantage is that it decouples tankers from Starships, and provides one step refuel for the outbound Starships. On launch these are simply oversized fuel tanks and should make it to orbit with residual fuel already in place. They form core of some follow on ideas I'm considering. Have you any quiet links to SpaceX engineers you can share? Discretely of course..
