Thank you for the info. And yes I did feel the difference between her and Rose. She is way more self confident and knwos what she wants. A very different tone. I really liked her as a "companion". :)

2022-03-15 16:21:36 +0000 UTCIn addition to her popularity as a comedy performer in the UK,Catherine Tate was also the first female companion (or,in this story,'woman who accompanies the Doctor') in the series history to be portrayed by a woman actor older than the actor playing the Doctor. This immediately set up a COMPLETELY different dynamic to that between the Doctor and Rose - which was important ,imo. Here is a woman around 15/20 years older than Rose;who has no interest in the Doctor as a potential 'romantic figure'; and who (to begin with) absolutely cannot stand him! I love this different dynamic. It's refreshing;effective;and much more entertaining.

I don't know if you know her other work but she wrote and performed in a sketch show where she played a number of recurring characters including an incredibly rude and offensive old lady known as "Nan" and a well meaning woman who always tries to be helpful by claiming she can do things that she really can't. Anyway, I do like this episode. A good mix of comedy and pathos. I will admit I find the spider woman more silly than scary though!
