I agree, it´s a good episode :) And also a tragic one. I have the feeling the Torchwood writers know exactly how to write those kinds of tragic stories by now. I didn´t fully understand that temporal lock either. But I guess it´s not really important either. If an episode is well written I can overlook certain "plottholes" :) Oh that´s true, I didn´t remember the pyjamas from the Christmas invasion when I heard that. Thank you for reminding me :)

I think this is a great story. A Toshiko story, a time-mixing story, a Torchwood-background story. I rate it very highly. And a tragic story - Tommy saves the world and in going back he will be shot for "cowardice". And Tosh knows it. The British army did shoot some soldiers for cowardice in WW1. It was only fifteen years ago that the UK government gave them a posthumous pardon. I like the time-mixing "ghost" appearances of time breaking down - as when the nurse comes back and talks to Gwen. And I also like the idea of the temporal-locked sealed instructions from the earlier Torchwood so the team can piece together what needs to happen - although I don't really understand how the older Torchwood was able to set it up the temporal-lock - some alien technology I suppose. The writer, Helen Raynor, also wrote "Ghost Machine". ... Tommy mentions saving the world in pyjamas. And we recall "The Christmas Invasion" where pyjamas were worn while saving the world.

I am glad that we got a Toshiko centric episode, because I like her character, too. :) The ending really was heartbreaking, but the worst thing imo was the fact that you knew all along. The scene at the beach was so sad for me, because like Tosh, you as a viewer knew this story wouldn´t end well. And seeing him beeing so happy, made it so much worse. What a great story writing. Hmmm maybe you are right about Jack and Ianto. I can´t really say I picked up on this before, but maybe I did miss certain hints that you are able to pick up on, while rewatching the show and knowing where it leads towards. By the way, if you some day find that rift, let me know. I wanna travel back in time, too :D

From Wiki: Helen Raynor, the writer of the episode, expressed an interest in writing a Toshiko-centric episode at the first script meeting for the second series of Torchwood. She wanted to write a story centred on Toshiko because she "absolutely loved Tosh as a character" and wanted "to take her on another step" Which she certainly did. Naoko Mori (he actress who plays Tosh) said that when she was reading the script she almost forgot that it was Torchwood or even science fiction and that she found the ending heart breaking. So did I. Definitely one of the most moving Torchwood stores and feels like one of the shortest because the story is so engrossing. I would rate it at somewhere between 8.5 and 9.00. About Jack and Ianto. I honestly can't remember whether I picked up on it the first time I watched but seeing all the episodes again it feels to me like their ongoing relationship has been signalled to us for a long time before this story. Perhaps that's just the benefit of hindsight but unless a rift opens up I can't go back and ask myself.
