Dr. Who Series 4 - Planet of the Ood

Oh that´s very interesting. They actually changed the place of this episode in the series. I mean it makes sense, it would really have been a little too dark for a first adventure. The scene in which Donna listens to the song is heartbreaking. I love how they gave us this glimpse into the doctors feelings and how much he really has to bare, all the time. And since he never really talks about his feelings it´s so much more impressive to be confrotend with it directly, as a viewer. I would have loved seeing Ida again in this episode. :) "There are other references- but not to New Who"....Very mysterious :) Yes I remember those "snow" scenes. I´m happy for him, to see real snow in this episode. :)

RTD called this story dark to the point of grim. It was moved to the third episode slot after "The Fires of Pompeii" because it would be too dark for Donna's first TARDIS adventure (but it's not like Pompeii was a comedy either). I love the way the story shows the Ood's telepathic connection with songs. And then after the Doctor offers to let Donna hear their song of captivity, she can only listen for a moment before it overwhelms her. Love Donna. There are of references back to "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit" (obviously). The "Friends of the Ood" was mentioned in the previous story. Actually, there was early plot idea that "Ida Scott" (the one who went down into the pit with the Doctor) would return in this story investigating conditions on the Ood planet. There are other Who references - but not to New Who. The Doctor mentions that it's nice to see real snow - the previous times we've seen snow (in the Christmas episodes) the snow has been ash or created by the TARDIS or ballast from the Titanic. And, as is often true in film production, they filmed the snow scenes during a heat wave in August.

Yes it really is a good episode :) I like the darker ones. Oh, thank you for the nightmares about David leaving us even before the finale. Not that I wasn´t worried enough already. :D :D

I agree, the Ood are great characters, and this episode was really good :) The doctor doesn´t stay the same forever? Stop crushing my dreams, I know for a fact that David will be the doctor for the next 10 series :D :D "Go with flow", easier said than done when it comes to giving up a favorite character, but I get what you mean :)

The Ood are one of the best creations of Nu Who. Their nature and their treatment by humans open up so many questions about our own morality. And this episode was very good on the issue of "not wanting to know" and following instructions without too many questions. The Doctor, of course, doesn't stay the same forever and his travelling companions don't stay with him forever. Whatever the hints and foreshadowing we can never really know much more than that. So go with the flow, I say.

This is a good episode - dark and strange, with a decent moral center. Halpern's punishment is one of most 'looking through the fingers' scenes in Who, imo; and of course there's that ominous portent at the end. It's worth bearing in mind that,in the history of Who,not all regenerations are delayed until the final story of a season. Not that I want to worry you unnecessarily, you understand. Far be it for me to use such heartless and emotionally exploitative expressions, such as "Brace yourself!"; but.... brace yourself. Yours, Ian
