Dr. Who Classics - Genesis of the Daleks Part 1

Surprise everyone :) This little series of episodes will be more or less surprise drops every now and then. I do not have any particular schedule for them. I´m gonna upload them as soon as they are ready. :) Which might be sooner than you think :D

Dr. Who Classics - Genesis of the Daleks Part 1

Comments

Thank you for telling me. :) I really thought this was the very first time the Daleks appeared on screen. This episode really helps me to understand where the Daleks are coming from and why they do behave the way they do. I will really have to go back and watch that Dalek episode again, with the knowledge that I do have now. :) Thanks for pointing out the "Good King Wenceslas" reference. :) Hmm I don´t know much about landmines to be honest, so thank you for the explanation. It just seemed really weird while I was watching it. There will be more of this story, soon :)

Haha I picked up on it after reading your comments. And now I knwo who the women is. But I will only acknoledge it in the 5 th part. Because I had already watched the other four parts before reading the Patreon comments. :D Thank you for the compliment about my mod. He really knows what he is doing. And if it wasn´t for him this channel would be a total diaster without any guidance through this Dr. Who universe. I´m very grateful for his help :) I do already have an idea about the chronological order of the doctors. I was provided with that information via Email. Also by my mod Andrew. :) But thank you nonetheless :) And I like Tom Baker as the doctor. I can´t really compare him to the rest of the Classic doctors because I´ve seen only 3 of them in action by now. But I really like him :)

Nicologik

Oh really? That is so interesting. Thank you for telling me :)

Nicologik

Haha no not at all. :D Not until I read all of your comments. :D I´m going to talk about this issue in the 5th part. Sorry for the disappointment. :D

Nicologik

It really is :) I´ll forward those compliments to him :)

Oh and I thought this was the very first story about Daleks in Dr. Who ever, lol :) It´s interesting to hear the backstory about the episodes getting darker, and parents were really upset, wow. I guess that´s why there is that warning up in the left corner of the screen. Nowadays most parents couldn´t care less what their children are watching. And it´s also very interesting how the perception of violence on tv shifted over the last decades. Haha that´s exactly what I was thinking. That landmine scene seemed so unrealistic. But then again the only knowledge I do have about them, is from other movies nowadays. So how credible can that be :D :D Davros is really well made. And he has a certain aura, that is not easy to describe. On the one hand he is such a calm, collected, clever and very intelligent character, but on the other hand he is really impulsive and choleric. And that can change from one second to the other. I really like that about him. And his appearance is very interesting with this half alien, half Dalek (which is also an alien lol) look. I like him and I somehow hope he doesn´t die in the last episode. Well..... I know this might be disappointing, but actually I didn´t pick up on Sarah Jane at all. Only after reading the Patreon comments, I found out that she is in the episodes. I´m pretty serious about that face blindness. :D As soon as a person looks different, there is almost no chance I will recognize them anymore. But I do talk about the issue in the 5th part. :D :D

So just to clarify - this is a story that goes backwards in time to see the origin of the Daleks. But it's not the first time TV viewers had seen a Dalek story. The Daleks always had this racial purity aspect in them and you can certainly see it in this origin story - with the obvious references to events in our own history. That purity idea is highlighted in the "Dalek" episode with Rose. Very obscure reference: they refer to the "Good King Wenceslas" carol (stepping in the Doctor's footsteps). Mr Copper mistakenly said that Good King Wenceslas was the ruler of the United Kingdom in "Voyage of the Damned". I think those are the only two references to "Good King Wenceslas" in Doctor Who - and you've now seen them both! One of the ways some landmines can be triggered is by movement and vibration. I think that was what Harry was trying to do - wedging stones under it to avoid the mine tipping over when the Doctor lifted his foot. I look forward to seeing more of this story.

I won't add to the hints about the female companion unless you want us to just come out and name her. Or about the earlier Dalek stories but I am so glad your mods picked this one to watch next. I was confused when they started you off with Kinda but I can see how clever they are being now. Tom Baker is easily my favourite Doctor of them all. He presents a frivolous and comical persona to the world but he can be very dark at times. Mind you, all the Doctors have some mix of those two characteristics. Even before the Time War. Are you happy to know where the Doctors you have seen so far fit into the chronology? Or would you rather wait until you have met more of them? Either way, I am sure you will love this story.

RTD always referred to this story as 'the first shots in the Time War'. You'll love it.

Ian Smith

So,you didn't recognise the woman then? Look closer :)

Ian Smith

Excellent choice! Absolutely excellent. My compliments to your Mod :)

Depending on how you count them, this was something like the tenth Dalek story since 1963. But we'd never seen or heard anything about their origins, at least in the televised stories. Terry Nation created the Daleks and wrote many of the stories up to this point. He's often accused of rehashing elements in some of those stories, but that's not a criticism that gets levelled at this one. This season was made under the creative direction of producer Philip Hinchcliffe and head writer Robert Holmes, and they deliberately shifted the show to something more suited for older children or teenagers; the darker and sometimes more violent tone of this era resulted in a backlash from some parents and others, and Hinchcliffe was eventually sacked. Apparently the cross worn by Nyder was something added to the costume by the actor. A bit too on the nose! It quietly disappears after (I think) the second episode. That Time Lord at the beginning looks like he's dressed as a court jester, albeit one who only wears black; that's probably an unfortunate accident of camera angles, but first impressions are hard to shake off! The landmine scene always seems odd to me, as my instinct would be to put a heavy weight on the top to take the place of the Doctor's weight. I don't claim any real knowledge of landmines, though, and of course in the 1970s many of the cast and crew (and audience) would have personal knowledge of such things. Those quibbles aside, Nyder makes his presence felt as a character as soon as he appears, and I always find myself wanting to see more of him. We only get that brief glimpse of Davros (and it's easy to miss the line of dialogue telling us that's him) but I think this grotesque-looking person in his Dalek-like "wheelchair" is also compelling. Even the location shots work well: classic Who was a bit notorious for using quarries to film alien planets, but it works perfectly here, and possibly even works better for a modern audience than it did at the time. I'm assuming your face-blindness clears up in a later video? ;-)
