Reminds me of the 2001 Nights manga/anime' or the Frank Herbert short story "By The Book"

Ken MacLeod in his book, _Learning the World_ solves the problem of generation ships: They are a single generation, as the "crew" are functionally immortal. Then towards the last 20 years of the flight, they start making babies. Not the old fashion way, though that's a possibility, but from a large database of genetic information. Create the embryo and gestate in the artificial womb. Then you have 20 years to raise the kids and get them ready for colonization.
