Daedalus... I grew up reading The Starflight Handbook (with frequent mentions of Daedalus) and National Geographic's Our Universe which had the stunning picture of Daedalus and Enzmann with tenders nearby.

R. Allen Murphey

I'll have to check that one out. I had not seen it because of the very reasons you cited ;)

A more recent entry to the colliding planets meme: the movie Melancholia (2011)- although it's almost more of a character study with the end of the world as a backdrop.

Michael Hutson

Argh! I must be going senile. When Worlds Collide is an obvious match.

My favorite pair of rogue worlds are Bronson Alpha and Bronson Beta, from _When Worlds Collide_ which fits this trope perfectly. Sadly, the "science" in them is badly dated and so are the cultural norms. The second book, _After Worlds Collide_ is very much "yellow peril" and "marxist" fear mongering. It's politics have not aged well. But, an updated version could be made, but I'd do away with the racism and just use good old politics to cause problems between the survivors.
