There might be a variant on the Pidgeonhole, where the auxiliary craft is nestled inside a sort of dimple or crater on the mothership, but no roof.

I have noticed reading 1950s science fiction that when it comes to computer abilities, they had lots of mis-judgement over which problems were hard and which were easy.

Well you don't need much of a weapon to fight a race that becomes thunderstruck when they see two people kissing

Oh, magic translators! Will wonders never cease! As portrayed by most SciFi shows, they can do real time translation of any language. The problem being is that it's really hard to do that. Especially when you consider all the different word order structures just in human languages! Wiki Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_order English is a Subject-Verb-Object language: He rides the spaceship. Japanese is Subject-Object-Verb: He the spaceship rides. Classical Arabic is VSO: Rides he the spaceship. Fijian is VOS: Rides the spaceship him. Hixkaryana is OVS: The spaceship rides him. And the rarest is OSV: The spaceship he rides. And that's a simple sentence. Try translating anything longer than that with multiple clauses and objects! Arthur at the Vogon Poetry Reading!

I would probably go with Budget Hangar Bays for most ships. What's that saying? Oh yeah, "Every Gram Counts". While a Standard Hangar Bay might have some uses, for the most part, it's lipstick on a pig. The only reason for a hangar bay is to make it look cool for your TV show/movie/video game. Otherwise I'd considered them a waste of space. I'd might consider a "Pigeonhole Budget Hangar Bay": Basically, a covered space where there's a wall/roof providing some protection, but otherwise its a Budget Hangar Bay.
