Surprised to see Alderic reacting so negatively to Tonic, he must be getting to the end of his limits if he's wishing to see someone into scraps. There was two lines that might have gotten names mixed up, "Aldric fell to the paving stones with a thump and a hoarse gasp," since it mentions recently gained weight I figure you meant Conway here? Also " Seeing the pair happy and inflated had made Tonic jealous." Hope this is helpful! Ugh, I can't wait to see what happens next, this is one of the rare stories that I cannot predict the ending.
