I started volunteering at the Farmer's Markets earlier this year. I love being surrounded by good food, folks that really believe in what they're doing, and doing well not only for their environment but their community.
I started at the Info Booth, getting a hang of who's there selling and general info about the organization and farms that run the market. I then moved onto a sort of CSA program. (CSA stands for Community Sourced Agriculture). A lot of farms do a weekly box with whatever produce was harvested that week.
The program I worked with was put on by the organization that runs the market. It's a super cool program, they source the produce from the farms that are at the market that day. Since the organization is a nonprofit, they actually buy the produce from the farms and sell the boxes for super cheap. They even offer a half off price for those with EBT. When someone buys a box, they're getting a steal, the farms are getting paid, we're doing good for the environment, and money is going back into the local economy. SO rad.
After doing a few months of that program I moved on to taking photographs for the market. A natural progression, of course.
