Here is a little video I put together showing how silly things can get in the studio sometimes. Back when we were writing Blue Sky Noise, Colin and I had a little inside joke (maybe we still do) where we used to add slides to everything possible. Oh that riff is ending? Slide. Oh that riff is about to start???? Slide. Oh the song is in a very quiet emotional section??? SLIDE!!! Maybe we did it as a way to relieve the tension that builds when you spend over a year straight writing a record.
When it came time to actually record the album, surely the shenanigans would end right? No way!!!!! This video is a testament to the idea that, if you mess around long enough, something good will eventually happen. The start of the video is the moment I "accidentally" created the best bass slide of all time. It's not recognized by the academy but I dare you to find a slide with more emotion and power!!! Not possible!!!
The slide became a catalyst to search for more interesting overdubs we could add to the song. Some of them didn't stay in the final mix, but you can hear some of it tucked in there!
