This piece is heavily inspired by Final Fantasy Spirits Within. It left a big impression on me as a kid. An alien ghost even uses its tentacle to pierce a woman’s womb. Orange alien ghosts.
First I was making the environment to look like the Nostromo interior (moody pipes and darkness) but it was getting too busy and ironically looking less sci-fi. So I went for a more cliche sterile look. Then I added windows with views of outer space to make sure you know this is a sci-fi setting. I learned this basic but subconscious trick from my first film class watching ‘Do The Right Thing’. To make the neighborhood weather feel hot they painted the buildings orange and red. Many times a creator thinks something is obvious but the audience misses it. This prevents that (usually). Of course I also like to try and make things complicated or artistic and not too cliche either.
