Mazfroth's Mighty Digressions (Patron)

Strange creatures are impersonating books and attacking people. A mysterious group of recent arrivals in the nearby city seem to be responsible. Do their reasons matter, or is a crime a crime?

This adventure can be run mostly as is. If you think your players feel moved to help the jackelweres, then you can use that as either a fun sales/performance rp moment, or you can use that to get them into the hook for either the next adventure in the book or that you plan.

For good characters, I would really play up the discrimination element of their leader being assumed evil just for who she is (a Lamia), and their plan wasn't to cause harm. They thought the books would eventually flee from the buyer's home and go live in the forest to hunt small critters. It is only due the magic of Candlekeep trapping them in the keep that caused them to try to attack people. They felt justified in fleecing the people of Baldur's Gate because of how the city put a bounty on the Lamia and how the people of the city celebrated the death of a "horrible monster" without any thought to the possibility that they weren't evil. Add to that element, you can have the jackelweres trying to be secretive because lycanthropes are all labeled as monsters and adventures are encouraged to kill them in Baldur's Gate on sight and without a care if they are causing harm or not.
