Avatar The Last Airbender 3x8 (Book 3)

No No, no, I'm sorry, Alicia. You're the one in beginning who was excited about the idea of blood bending. You're like that be so cool And be so awesome and so useful and now you get mad at katara for using it in self, defense against the lady who was trying to make her friends harm each other. You have no right to be mad at katara For using blood bending in that instance to save her friends and stop the old lady. from harming others. I'm also gonna say that when fighting in a war or in life-or-death situations. When you are protecting your life and your friends and family's lives. You sometimes have to cross that line. And do things you would never ever want to do in order to survive and in order to protect yourself and others. Hypothetical situation here. Let's say you're fighting an opponent who is way way way stronger than you and your getting your ass beat and you're about to die. Now. You have a trump card. But this trump card is a very messed up and unethical technique. And you would never, ever want to use it outside of last-ditch effort in order to win and survive. Don't tell me you wouldn't use it in that hypothetical situation. Don't tell me you would just let them kill you or let them kill one of your friends or family members instead of using this unethical technique. I'm just gonna say it You have contradicted yourself so much with what you have said previously in the show to what you have said now with what's going on in the show currently it's kind of hypocritical.

Iron_claw

there is a bit of hypocrisy here. Alicia would be you go queen towards Azula but toward bloodbender se was like she is evil. idk man I feel like Azula is way more evil then the bloodbender

Sage of All knowing

It takes very little for an action to step into the realm of the unethical. Yet it takes a few more steps to become unforgivable. There is still a gradient between types of murder. This is reflected in every form of social morality you can find.

Dopamine Cloud

Nah it ain't that deep brother OP had the right idea

HelloStranger

Always nice to see someone who gets how messed up blood bending is. Almost every reactor I watch acts like it's weird that Katara is so against it. Wild considering how often we talk about the importance of consent these days.

AlienBrain

Saw thumbnail of katara crying and was all what episode? Then went β€˜HAMA’ BIG GG on guessing bloodbending from the fecken get go you’re awsome Also watching katara fight Hama she was using earth bending techniques and it’s so cool also Zuko when he fought Azula in book 2 he was used water bending esk style with his fire bending

Winter Turnip

I still can't believe Alicia saw this coming way back at the start of the series. This made such a great, creepy halloween episode. ^_^

Collanaro Percalon

A lot of people don't notice, but the part where Hama says Katara I'd blood bender is never shown to be said out load. The camera pans away when she says that. I think that those words were unspoken, otherwise the towns people would have attacked Kitara as well.

Baron Salt

It's not a matter of killing, it's a matter of you literally forcing your will onto another person. You take away their autonomy and make them into puppet. Blood bending doesn't kill, it objectifies your target and takes away any form of choice. Morally it's more fucked up than straight up killing with bending.

Baron Salt

The Avatar world has its entire own religion though, its residents don't observe Christianity.

pizzamonkey

Well, for one you could look at it from a religious side. God's ultimate gift to humanity was the gift of free will, the ability to think and do whatever one wants, and blood bending directly takes that away from you. It's a deeply sacrilegious act that directly interferes with and takes away from you your god given rights and is therefore one of the worst crimes one can commit. Or, to look at it from another perspective; there's surprisingly little we as humans can control in the world. Even the things we think we can control are ultimately limited by what one can afford and what's available at the time. There's only one thing in life that we can truly claim sole ownership over and that can't be taken away from us by anyone else, no matter what: ourselves. Our bodies, our minds. Or at least that should be the case, if it wasn't for things like mind control/body possession. The reason why blood bending is considered so unethical, is in essence the same reason why sexual assault is. It not only violates your body, but your very being and takes away from you that one thing in life you and only you should have control over. In a sense blood bending is basically akin to sexual assault, and yeah, while it may be effective and maybe even less painful than other things that you could do to someone else, it's still deeply traumatic and a violation of a person freedoms and rights.

JHow

tbh i never understood why bloodbending is considered more unethical then other means of fighting with bending. whats the diference if you kill someone with their own blood or a rock you thew at them? and people use rocks ice and metal to restrain each other in those fights all the time. Dont get me wrong using it outside of battle to get rid of free will of someone is monsterous, but in a fight its all the same. If anything its less painful then just beating them with a rock untill they lose conciousness. ang and soka were clearly more confused and discomfortable then in pain while heving their blood bended.

Igor Chmurski

Anyone else catch that all those people from that Fire Nation town that took away Hama at the end heard her saw that Katara is a bloodbender? In other words that she and Katara are actually waterbenders? I can't believe I never realized it until now.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

This is my favorite episode πŸ˜„

Nakama Forever

I absolutely NEEED more ATLA in my veins!!

Rolandem

Moral of the story? Any element, any person, can become a war criminal.

Qarl McGreggin

The reason why Hama looked so shocked when katara blocked her last attack was becauase katara was actually using a earthbending stance firmly planted and unyielding while naturally waterbenders ebb and flow with their enemies force

Tyler Denny

oh boy here it is

Princess Paladin

Oh boy oh boy. One of my favorite eps. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Darkendreign

On top of that I think it harkens back to the "ignorance is bliss" saying. Before she had no knowledge of the technique, but now that she does, pretty much every battle becomes a moral quandary for her. Since bloodbending is such an absolute domination it would make sense to use it whenever you can, it's the easy way out. It's such an interesting facet to the power system.

Thank you for the episode! <3

Lemon Rat

Everyone hyping up bloodbending until you see what it does xD Hama shows what War can do to people even when they started out on the "good" side

Sven Hegenbart

Also another small detail that gets overlooked a lot is Katara implementing earth bending techniques thought her fight with hama, which catches her by surprise as normally water benders would redirect water attacks toward their opponents but Katara just stopped it completely. Really encapsulated the progress team avatar has gone through at that point

Minseok Kim

Someone probably already mentioned this but the reason hama had puppets of fire nation soldiers was most likely so she can practice blood bending without the aid of the full moon, probably via water channels in the puppets' bodies

Minseok Kim

It always struck me so much that Katara was hurt so deeply by the very act of learning bloodbending. I could never understand it as a kid, but as a Man I think I can understand a little better. She just felt her most important connection to her home, her culture, her family, and even her spiritual practice, get perverted by someone else's deeply internalized hatred. Justified or not, this episode is a lesson that hatred that deep is toxic to everyone who harbors it. God I love this show.

AlexXis Amadeus

It's really heavy. Bloodbending is something that we kind of wish for before you give it much thought of how messed up it is. BTW, that Katara-like girl in Hama's flashback was supposed to be GranGran.

Ed Ambriz

One of the best Halloween episodes of any show ever.

rrrebo

Thanks for your video

TrinitytheApostle

It could also be used really well for healing if you think about it, but yeah there is real dark potential for it as seen in the show.

GingerBardMan

This show is so good at teaching real life lessons, in this case about one of the consequences of war. We think of the cost of war in terms of lost lives and property, but another element is what it does to the people who survive. As bad as Hama is, she is a product of the desperate war she fought and seems to legitimately not be able to see how what she is doing is wrong.

GingerBardMan

7:15 tell me that doesn't sound like Shaggy

Rhodair

every element has its ultimates cool episodes to come

Christian Dixson

Alicia: I'm just waiting for someone to blood bend at this point. Me: *uneasy laughter*

James S

The thing that makes Bloodbending so disturbing isn't the fact that you're bending blood, but it's the utter domination you have over someone. You're literally forcing yourself inside them and bending them to your will. I know some people who try and downplay bloodbending as an art, but the real world implications of bloodbending are clear as day. It's why I love it as a concept in the world, a true dark side to a bending style that had always been depicted as pure and healing.

Si1ence32

I'm also rooting for you to be able to have kids. I know how important a good mama is and also how many kids don't get that. I know you'd be a good mom and you deserve to be. As for when and why Katara is gonna use bloodbending...*Makima smile.*

James Gheen

Wish you a speedy recovery queen <3 I sympathize with Hama, being locked away and watching as her brothers and sisters disappeared around her while fighting a losing battle. Doesn't excuse what she did of course. Also I swear Ants precognition abilities are rubbing off on you, you called that book 1 queen XD And yeah Bloodbending is probably the darkest power in Avatar and the animators showed how disturbing it is perfectly. Thanks for the upload :)

Joey Cat

Glad everything went smoothly. Love the reaction btw

Carl Morgan

at 1:30 ... i know she said `...a moment of clarity...` but my mind didnt pick it up fast enough and understood `...post nut clarity...`, I dont know why or how but it happend! but it did... shes having some rough times, tho still stands her ground and delivers us some good content to enjoy, but I wanted to share why I had some rlly inappropriate hard laughter at that moment XD

BamBam

Also no air to breathe

Trevor Appel

that makes sense!!! without air there is also no firebending... crazy thought!

BamBam

Honestly, even though what she did was terrible, I always felt bad for Hama. Imagine you get stolen away from Home and then have to watch your brothers and sisters slowly die, until it's just you, and you basically just wait for death at this point. Kinda wished there would have been a different solution then throwing her right back into Jail, where she has to be restrained until the end of her life.

Boki

Well... now you have 2 things to recover from. But i really hope you will recover well.

Miklar Sihn

This episode shows that every element has a dangerous side. Even air bending. It is theorized that Aang's teacher killed the fire nation soldiers by removing all the air from the tent

Trevor Appel

Thank you for your great content :)

Christopher Schwandt

Glad you're recovering; I hope it goes quickly and smoothly! Also your reactions to "So I'm a Spider, So What?" got me addicted to that series and I've binged 11 episodes so far. Also also this episode is pure fire.

Liesmith

Hope the recovery goes well. Your output is obscene, especially with all the medical stuff.

Derek

yoooooooo
