I had the same idea as Ant with the lighter, that the test isn't keeping the flame lit, but being honest if it did go out. Kinda disappointing that it wasn't that, but y'know, it's Araki, that would be too predictable.

I LITERALLY just realized he said he hid the flame IN the petals, not that the flame was the petals. Easy mistake I just figured it out.

Interesting bit of trivia! The tips of his fingers being bitten off is actually a reference to the main guitarist of Black Sabbath, who got those same fingertips chopped off in a metalworking accident just days before he started his career as a metal guitarist. He got prosthetic fingertips, hence why Black Sabbath has such a somber sound on the guitar that sounds kinda demonic and strange compared to other bands, according to some sources.
