I think that forgiveness and reconciliation are two very different things but people often conflate the two and end up confusing things. Forgiveness is releasing the debt. When we are wronged we naturally want some justice, even if it is only an apology. or sometimes we want payback. But forgiveness is letting go of that need and no longer expecting anything back. it does more for us than it does for them in allowing us to move on. Forgiveness in that sense is very important. Reconciliation is something else altogether. That is the part where you rebuild the trust and relationship. But while forgiveness can be freely given by just one side reconciliation requires both sides and real repentance for the wrong that happened. it is much harder and sometime we just can't know if the other side is being real. Sometimes you have to cut people out of your life for you own safety and mental health and there is nothing wrong with that. Sometimes the best thing you can do is forgive and then forget about them. Move completely on. Sometimes, that is the kindest thing to do.
