Sorry, but this is not accurateaccurate. Pluto is tiny and pathetic enough that it would never have been called a planet in the first place if those who discovered it had a good view of it. We have known for almost a full century that it does not belong in the same category as the actual planets. The dwarf planet category was created to encompass not just Pluto but also Ceres, Gonggong, Orcus and a dozen others we have confirmed, along with another 50 estimated dwarf planets that have yet to be discovered out in the Oort cloud. The "Degrass Tysons" of the world do not hate Pluto and had nothing to do with the decision to begin with. I am utterly mystified why you think anyone would have a "hate boner" for a rock... Mercury has indeed cleared its orbit and fully meets the definition of a planet. To correct your metaphor it's more like a long time ago somebody got a brief blurry look at a Lynx and decided it was a dog. It was obvious upon second glance that it was never a dog, but somehow the idea that it was one ended up in textbooks anyway, and it took a while for the mistake to get fixed because the definition of a dog was old and too vague. and now people are getting angry that the problem was finally addressed . Seriously the outrage is nonsensical.

2024-12-22 03:52:37 +0000 UTCPluto not being a planet has to do with a specific criterion created just for the purpose of removing Pluto from planet status because some astronomer fucked up a simple quiz online. For centuries a planet needed to simply orbit the sun and be a sphere. But in 2006, when they removed Pluto, they added that a planet clears items in its orbit. This new criterion would mean that Mercury is no longer a planet, but the Degrass Tysons of the world have a major hate boner for Pluto. It would be like adding in some random bullshit criterion for what is considered a dog that deliberately aims to remove entire breed groups from the position of "dog", like dogs are only dogs if they are a meter tall when on all 4 legs.

It's hard to really feel for people on this when it really is just a word among many, akin to calling someone "moron," "stupid," "lame," or "daft," all words with their own histories and contexts. Sure, language changes and all, but people's sensibilities can hardly be considered a justification when they change so easily and often with little reason.

2023-07-18 18:52:01 +0000 UTCAs far as i know, the thing that did it was that it didnt dominate its orbit. A planet has to either clear its orbit or all the things left in the orbit have to orbit it. Basically, only it and its moons can share that orbit, which is why it is not a planet.
