Note .. not making excuses for him hes a pos. But she's smart and confident. And to Jerry that makes her scary. They're used a lot by neurodivergent people, like autistic people, since tone can be hard to discern, especially through text. And nowadays there's a lot of people who use emojis or emoticons (like "xD") in a way that's ironic or mean-spirited, so tone indicators are a way to cut out any malicious ambiguity for people who would otherwise have a hard time parsing what people mean.
