Straw Hat Episode 103

MR 2!!!

Straw Hat Episode 103

Comments

I take a small break and you're at 200! I have some catching up to do...

Sable Etoilé

Oda SAYS Doublefinger’s day is January 1st, 1/1, New Years Day, which is a little wild, but is he also saying the calendar is the same in this world, and if Christmas exists, is this somehow meant to be Earth?

Verdigree

SPOILER!

Christian Thomassen

Oh shit, Mr 2 is training the Ginyu Force.

Liesmith

I'm curious if Alicia would be interested in here some of the songs in English. I still thought it was really cool of Funimation to dub the first couple of openings.

Stephen

Who has a tinier waist: Miss Doublefinger or Violet Chachki?😂😂

Joe Vocaire

Transvestite is not a kosher term to use these days, just so you guys know. This is why they got rid of Jolyne saying "Okama" to Foo Fighters in episode 9 of Stone Ocean

Yagi di Hoshi

I don't know if you've already seen them, but the english dub also dubs the first 4 or so openings, which are pretty rad. I've been having a blast singing along in english every opening so far :)

Linus

'Doublefinger' is Oda for New Year's Day (1/1, one finger raised in each hand)

Ruby Kelly

have you ever watched sword art online abridged

nicko jones

omg so happy youre reacting to live action too! super excited! I was wondering if you plan on reacting to the movies too? I know youre not at the point where you can watch them yet but I was just curious

AngriestBear

Even if so, you're still robbing people of the experience and excitement off figuring these things out for themselves. Even if you think something obvious, just let them figure it out for themselves at their own pace and don't just rob them of the experience. Seriously, what are getting out of this, except for ruining the fun for people who want to figure these things out for themselves? Not really something to be proud off, if you ask me. Not that you'd care, since otherwise you wouldn't pull this bs to begin with.

JHow

would not be surprise if it's actually a double sense with oh come my way tho, Oda really like using words that sound like two different things

Fenronin (Dorian Dubourg)

The extremely thin stomach reminds me of the animated aeon flux, if anyone remembers that one.

Dragmire

Another bit of lore that Oda puts in our face that won't be relevant for another couple hundred episode with that paper that Ace gave Luffy. With how Ace gave it to Luffy implies that it will be important later, but we won't know how that will be relevant until much later when Ace is put on the main plot course for Luffy. For those who will undoubtingly scream out "SPOILER" at me in the replies, all of these points can be inferred as soon as Ace had given the paper to Luffy on that interaction alone, and being directly related to the protagonist in such a massive story as One Piece will obviously be a recurring character later down the line. Even without knowledge of future events, those with keen eyes and logical thinking can notice the dots and link them together.

Technically yes, however rather than any particular holiday or festival, it’s actually a period in time that defines the end of the year. It is a combination of お盆(Obon) and 歳暮 (Seibo) in which the “Seibo” marks the year’s (歳(年)) end (暮れ), and people start to prepare gifts and such to show appreciation to those around them (kind of like thanksgiving I guess?) And as you might have notice, it is actually quite big of a gap, so they aren’t actually put together due to their closeness (unlike Golden week). Nowadays 盆暮れ (Bon kure) is used to define a period in which people go back home to spend time with their family, and is used mostly for Obon, since now in modern Japan, people just use “New Year’s” instead of Seibo.

naito

It's nice to have you back!

Beelz

Whooooo welcome back! Missed your awesomeness, but take your time and don't push yourself on or account!

Seraphem

Bon Clay is two different holidays that often get combined due to how close they are, the Obon and Kurie festivals, which yes the initial translations transliterated as "Clay" instead of "Kurei".

Now that we are finally introduced to all the high ranking agents of Baroque Works, I feel that now is a good time to explain the logic behind the female agent names. (Not sure if anybody has already said this, but I’ll just go ahead anyway) As you might know, the male agents have uses numbers, and the lower the number, the higher their rank. (This much was said in the series so most people should know it by now) However, the female agents’ names are lesser known. They are named based on holidays that make people happy. So the higher the male agents they are partnered to, the happier the holidays they are named after make people. (Mind you, this is still based on the Japanese perspective) So from Mr 5. To Mr 0., it’s Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Golden Week (technically multiple holidays, but due to how close they occur to each other, the whole week has been designated as a holiday), Obon holiday (Mr 2’s other agent name is Bon Clay, which in the Japanese pronunciation is Bon Kure, which means the Obon period basically)(think of this holiday as something similar to the Day of the Dead in Mexico, where families makes use of this holiday to visit their loved ones’ graves), New Years (Miss Doublefinger’s holiday, as the New Years date is 1/1, which can be taken as 2 fingers held up, hence doublefingers!), and lastly the mommy herself, Ms All-Sunday (all the Sundays in the year) which is technically not a holiday, but who ain’t happy whenever Sunday rolls around? Anyways, sorry for the long post, hope whoever read this had a fun time and now know why the female agents are named the way they are! Have a great day!

SHEEEEEEEEEESSSSS BACCCCCCKKKKKKKKK

Jamel Cornish

@Jay Redmond they should've left it as "okama" and not translated it at all. Also, I'm pretty sure that in later sagas the subs often translate okama as queer too, so they must've changed their mind.

leviathan_13

I think they changed it because "homosexual way" or "transvestite way" doesn't sound as good.

Jay Redmond

i believe it's a pun as in he wants his followers to "come my way to the Okama way" but either doesn't translate well or they translator didn't realise what he was saying and just translated the katakana "カム・マイ・ウェー" to "come my way"

nick

@Lotus Gramarye I read that Okama is Japanese slang for homosexual or transvestite. So maybe I should've said that. If you want to talk about queer representation in One Piece, I think the video "One Piece: A Queer Retrospective" from MelonTeee is an excellent analysis. @Mattguy you need to be more specific.

leviathan_13

Wtf are you even talking about? If you actually think that, we didn't watch the same show btw im replying to the no name person in these replies

Mattguy

Glad to have you back Alicia

mykanike

Okama =/= being queer. It is more directly equivalent to "drag queen" with Mr. 2 himself being a direct reference to an okama friend of Oda's that he wanted to pay respects to. Which results in the character being an interesting mix of good, as Oda is clearly aiming to do a respectful portrayal, and awful, as Oda is clearly a very cis/het man with all of the bad and bigoted assumptions about gay people that would imply (as shown by latter okama characters who are portrayed as being creeps and rapists... but in a comedic way so it's funny, lol (it's not very funny)).

Lotus Gramarye

IMPORTANT NOTE: Mr. 2 will often say "Okama Way", where "Okama" is the Japanese word that can be roughly translated as queer. Being queer is a very important feature of the character of Mr. 2, it's not just a quirky one-off thing. For some reason, the subs in this saga will translate it as "Oh Come My Way" but that makes no sense at all. Alicia, stop your horny brain, she is called Miss Doublefinger because it's a reference to new year's day, which is 1-1 (which btw it's also Oda's and Ace's birthday) and Oda was used to refer to that day with two index fingers. P.S.: Allegedly, there were also men who removed a couple of ribs in order to... ehm, "reach down there" and suck themselves off.

leviathan_13

So Mr. 2's song is either a pun or a mistranslation. He's saying Okama way (The way of the drag queen), but the translation says "Oh Come My Way".

One piece have this thing where it introduced charachters that ( I dont hate ) but are just goofy and annoy the hell out of me. and then grow on you like a fungus to the point where you love them and then they usually have these epic moment where you go like...
