FMAB Ep 11

I love this show

FMAB Ep 11

So now that it's passed. Many lines in the OP connect with the line before it and the one after it. A youtuber who ranked all the OPs broke things down for them, especially the 1st one. I want to show 2 cuts/lines from S1's opening and how they're 2 sides of a coin. The grizzled adults and the light-footed kids. The green and red are even opposites. One sky is blue, lit up by the sun. The other is in the dead of night, and despite the large and dangerous fire, isn't being brightened. Most of the character's cuts are fast and brief with less-involved people like Pinako getting a still shot with more time for the viewer to dwell on the shot. 'Don't make that sad face, as if you've fallen victim' As the line is sung, the Elric brothers are running westward through a grassy field resembling the eastern countryside, since they share the same goal of getting their bodies back. They're on their way to Ed's State Alchemist assessment exam. The camera is close to the ground, as they have little perspective on what's ahead, but they're hopeful. Like the lyrics say, the Elric brothers can't really call themselves victims. They messed with something they knew they shouldn't have messed with. They're also following Roy's advice to move forward and going where he points them to as a favor for following orders. Connecting this cut and the next. Ed is very large in the foreground since he's the main protagonist and he's open about his cause. Al is in the background, but despite that, we can see most of his body in-frame, since his situation and fate are a big weight in the back of Ed's mind. 'As if you want people to pity you' Here, the camera moves past the front of Hughes' shoulder. His glasses start off opaque but quickly reveal Hughes' sharp, focused gaze before closing his eyes. Blind to the danger he was putting himself in from a breakthrough he makes by researching the uprisings and massacres from history. Hughes and now Roy face away from each other, showing their differing priorities but their proximity show that they're watching each other's backs. Roy is on the offensive, climbing the ranks while Hughes makes sure no one flanks Roy. As soon as Hughes is out of frame, a distant growing fire in Roy's path casts embers before him. They are his ambitions, responsibilities and tribulations ahead. It's everything he is and has involved himself with, including the Elric brothers and the Ishvalan civil war. As the camera slowly pans closer to his face slightly off to the side, as if creeping up on him, we see more of the fire and embers. However, just as we're able to see the sides of Roy's eyes, a bright surge of fire gets past him and he fully turns around to make sure Hughes is ok, but it all happened in a flash. Just like that, Hughes was gone. It slows down and ends with Hawkeye lip-syncing the line's last part. She is Roy's assistant, confidant and de facto bodyguard so she has to bear some of Roy's burden, as well as check him and ground him. Right as the line ends, there's a drop and the song speeds back up with intensity. Not sparing any more time. The soldiers are aware of what they've done and currently do, and they don't want the Elric brothers (or anyone at all) to go through what they did in Ishval. Roy's company, including the Elric brothers, can't expect pity in this grueling journey to find the truth within the truth.

The third wanted poster of the dude with the moustache is a corrupt alchemist that Ed and Al only encountered in og FMA, where their actions expose his corruption and get him arrested. So he may appear in this series, but he won't remember them the same way as in the first FMA series.

A New Yorker, the phrase you are looking for is New Yorker. Can't tell you how many times i have been told some variant of "shut your mouth get another plate and eat you f***ing moron

Craig

in the manga there's a whole conversation that was cut where Dominic discovers that Winry's grandma is Pinako and it's revealed there's some sort of history between the two of them that's left the poor man COMPLETELY terrified of her lmao. It ends up another reason for him not wanting to take her on as an apprentice

stardmg

Dominic is the kind that will insult you while simultaneously offering you a second helping of dinner.

I feel like I have to claim Fairy Tail is an exception to that, as it's one of the "big"shonen which has great female characterization with growth, but I know liking Fairy Tail is a bit of a controversial thing, as it has other aspects to it that a lot of people find unpalatable, like a complete allergy to character deaths :p

Zakarin Talvas

I agree wholeheartedly on the great handling of female characters, and wouldn't you know it.. *dramatic drumroll* it was written by a woman!

cyberspacecat

The guy in the wanted poster on the right is from an early arc that was in FMA but was skipped in FMAB. If you have the time I'd recommend watching the original series first 25ish episodes, FMAB squished those 25eps down to 10 so a lot got cut out

Ztllain

When year 11 was mentioned it’s referring to 1911 not 2011

EthanEverhart

I mean, on its face the character writing IS more shallow that this show, no questions. But its fun as hell and has a best girl thats up there with Marin from My Dress Up Darling...maybe two.

Good female characters got me thinking. Idk what future shows are in the pipeline but Lycoris Recoil is one of those "let me dream, dammit" shows

2lazy2username

I mean, they probably don't want to span multiple episodes or make it into a montage.

And right after an episode with a death we get one with a birth. For this is the law of equivalent exchange. Also I have two sisters and from what my mother has told me, she gave birth to one of them very quickly and she aslo said that she "slid right out", so Alicia saying that reminded me of it. xD

Rat#394

Hiromu Arakawa being a woman really shone through in this ep imo

Addeand

i love one piece but i loved watching fmab its so good, i watched both and to say that was confusing would be an understatement lol

james blaire

as much as i like shonen, alot of shonen stuff doesnt do female characters well, so like, you really got to get out of that genre if you want women to get real development

Levi Tompkins

Arakawa has just done amazing work on everything in this anime. One of my favourite bits is that she actually interviewed veterans to help write the military personnel in this series.

Miklar Sihn

Is Hughes the narrator?

Fobbles

this show really is a cut above the rest with female characters, a lot of that has to do with the fact that it is written by Hiromu Arakawa. She did so much research into history to craft such a real feeling fantasy shonen.

The 16bit Couple

This show really does female characters well, it's so nice seeing a female character who isn't just waiting around for the main character. She's actually got a life and is doing her own thing.

TheTrashBandit

"Fuck yeah!"

LordWhitebeard

"Grandma wanted me to tell you she's making stew tonight!"

Tbf, in the OG FMA it was during a blizzard and the doctor was days/weeks away... It's part of what makes Hughes death so tragic, is in OG it was his wife with Elice that they helped deliver (this was also the discovery that Ed could do alchemy without a circle, and neither brother knew why)

Apollo Gize

I normally don't like to point out comparisons (especially with a masterpiece like FMAB) but I do think the original and the time compressions need to be brought up here.. In OG FMA, the pregnant woman they helped was Hughes wife with Elice. It's a major factor of why he treats them like such close family, because if they hadn't been there, he may not have a wife or daughter!! As tragic as his death was, its important to consider how it was even more impactful after 25 episodes with him instead of 10, and with that much personal bonding, showing how they have known each other for years...

Apollo Gize

In every Medium the baby is coming "NOW". And everytime I have to accept it xD While in RL this takes hours on hours on hours xD

MoD+

I know it's a way off but when you do finish this series make sure you watch the blooper reel for it
