NieR:Automata Episode 1

:3 WOOOOOO! NIERRRRRRR

NieR:Automata Episode 1

Comments

The game is honestly one of my favorites of all time. Whenever you do play it it does have multiple play throughs. After you get ending A you unlock another story mode to get ending B, then C, then D and E and you have to get all of them to unlock the true ending. And there’s a ton of just funny endings throughout for example at one point instead of following instructions you go another way and it triggers an ending where they went awol and never was seen again the end. But I’ve already seen all three episodes and honesty it’s gorgeous. I love this so much and already enjoying watching it again with ya!

Nier was deliberately made to include western audiences. Technically everything in the game functions off what's called chaos language and so not only is the game story experience just as good in english as in Japanese or French, but the Music where singing happens will typically be either chaos language or written for multiple languages.

I've seen people complain about it, but it looks perfectly fine to me. Like, that's what the CGI looks like in the game. They're maintaining the aesthetic, and I really appreciated that.

Youmu Senju

I agree with a previous commenter here and highly recommend the English Voices for when you play the game, if you're comfortable with that. The voices are amazing and the VAs did an incredibly good job!! Goated indeed.

Stuffle-chan

Oh dear, I think you've started too many series, and I'd be grateful if you could finish one or two first. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Nier automata is one of my all time favorite games. How they're doing the joke endings is really cute, too. They're basically just events where you're like "okay, doing a certain thing at the worst possible time kills everyone.... lets see if the game allows for it." like detonating your black box on the satellite base in this episode. I didn't even know this was getting an anime, too lol. But I basically live under a rock.

Nuclear Boarhead

This seems like a pretty good adaptation of the “script” of the game, but I’m honestly still sceptical of it’s ability to adapt the….. ‘rest’. A lot of the narrative strengths of the game ultimately rely the interactivity of the medium, and I just don’t think a 1 to 1 adaptation of the scenes and dialogue can capture those strengths. So I honestly hope they end up doing something different instead of retelling the game’s narrative, just in a more linear fashion, cos things WILL get lost in translation that way.

Okay thanks

TrinitytheApostle

Yea, Yui Ishikawa provides the voice of 2B in both the show and the game, Mikasa in AOT and Violet in Violet Evergarden

Evan

Fun fact for those who don't know, 2b's Jp VA also voices Mikasa from AOT and her Eng VA voices Honoka from DOA, Jolyne from jojo's p6, and Mitsuri from DS. 9s' Jp VA voices Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul, Tanjiro from DS, and Beam the Shark Fiend. His Eng VA also does, Saiki K. from Saiki K., Narancia from jojo's p5, Mob from Mob Psycho. ALSO over 300 polygons were used to make 2b's ass as fine as it was in game :)

Apparently Nier had a chance to be in smash, meaning there was a chance that the Smash dlc would've been some twisted form of cannon or there would've been cannon lore drops exclusive to Smash

I love eating Mackerel, the taste is absolutely divine. I wonder if Androids will ever get to experience that pleasure as well

This is such a great adaptation, though many have complained about the cg it didnt bother me and I hear its because the studio wasnt given much time. Yes there are loads of endings, one for each letter of the alphabet. Though endings A-E are proper endings as we would think of them, F-Z are joke endings where you can just find fun things, and it looks like our post credit scenes will explore them, which should be fun. Like today's was ending U, or Deb[U]nked as its known, where you blow up the bunker using the self explodey move you mentioned from soul calibur and basically cause a game over.

Ah! This went up just before I went to bed last night! I'm late! Anyways, so far the anime is very, very close to the game, some shots and a lot of dialogue is recreated one to one basically. Nier Automata is a sequel to Nier Replicant and Nier Gestalt which are two versions of the same game, the difference being if you play as a brother taking care of his sister or a father taking care of his daughter but the events of the games are the exact same. Replicant and Gestalt are ni turn kind of a sequel to Drakengard which is a game in a medieval fantasy setting where one ending had the characters teleport to the real world and the Nier series spun off of that ending while Drakengard 2 followed a different ending of Drakengard 1. The voice cast is really good for both the Japanese and English versions of the game. You might recognize Japanese 2B as Yui Ishikawa who also plays Mikasa in Attack on Titan. The music in this game was produced by a studio called Monaca which was established by the composer Keiichi Okabe who has done work on a lot of games including the Tekken series since Tekken 2. Other composers for Automata are Keigo Hoashi, Kuniyuki Takahashi, and Kakeru Ishihama. You also have Emi Evans who has written a lot of the lyrics for songs in the game which are done in her own made up language that she calls Chaos Language which is basically meant to emulate what English, French, German and other modern languages might sound like to someone who's never heard them. I'll definitely talk more about the music as we go. That intro sure has a lot of cheeky nods to those of us who have played the game, huh. Of course not gonna point any out but there's a lot going on there. The thing abotu the endings with the puppets (which is very on brand for writer/driector Yoko taro who's known for being quite eccentric) refers to how the game has not only several "real" endings but also like some twenty joke endings that are triggered by certain actions. For instance, you can get an ending by dying in the tutorial, you get "Ending W". There's one ending for every letter in the alphabet.

Bob

Damn, the first episode really was basically just the intro from the game. Brings back so many memories...also love the ending part they did there. Thats pretty cool of them to do for peeps who never played the game ^^

S1LΣnt_N1ko

It's neir you have to know a live action stage play just to get some of the context for a very "i wanna know" but minor part of the whole thing...a live action Stage Play just to get some of a character's backstory. And then we had the Nier Raids in the Final Fantasy Online, which unveiled a detail where before fans of Nier and the associated series Drakengrade were like "oh cool nod, but Yoko's an asshole i bet there is a connection" and fans are there going "what now you fucking insane bastard? Is Nier actually Kingdom Hearts that Sora and everyone have been fighting over? How much more despair and hesrtbreak can you spread over the god domn Square Enix multiverse!?" Madman's Gonna Go back and reveal that Smithy from Super Mario RPG is actually an incarnation of the Machine Lifeforms."

cody raugh

Enjoyed the reaction, unfortunately after playing the game this entire episode saddened me..

Kevin

IDK, that's the thing with the intro to neir...and neir in general...it come across like "wait why would anyone actually enjoy this" and then after a little bit your there turning a blind eye to the imperfections and just adoring everything even the moments when the developers intentionally troll you with bad game design. Like this episode is essentially the tutorial level...the tutorial level where you are likely to die and if you do you go straight back to the start of the game.

cody raugh

This episode was pretty much the game's 30 min intro which was mostly tutorial gameplay. It works well for the game but it doesn't translate well to an anime pilot episode.

Rafael Ramirez

This anime looks a bit rough. Only one feeling that? (I never played anything Nier). Will give it few more episode to see if story is solid.

Ivan

Hard recommend. I love Cherami Leigh so goddamn much.

AlexXis Amadeus

I would definitely recommend the English dub when you play the game. The voice acting is top tier. EDIT: And I haven't finished Automata yet. I really need to get back into it.

Youmu Senju

Yea, as someone else said, I am pretty sure that 2B's VA is Mikasa

Siva Stealth

I loved the nier games so much but this seems to just be a retelling of the Automata game. Since you haven't played that's great, the story is amazing and im 100% sure youre gonna love it but I think I'm gonna skip this, already played the story a few times over lol since you like nicknames,, everyone calls her 2Booty xD even a whole subreddit for it!!

GormleyPeach

I love the game too, might have to check it out

Wubs

Nier has one of my alltime favourite OSTs. I'm so glad that they're actually using the soundtrack from the game.

Tranbärnöjd

They made an anime?!

Wubs

Nier Automata is tied for my second favorite game of all time. I'll say, based on this first episode, I'm mildly concerned but cautiously optimistic. ALSO since she plans on playing the game, I'm wondering how much they plan on giving in the anime information wise. Once you take the genie out of thew bottle as they say.

18C

Didn't know there was a show of this game, never played it but awesome! The music is so amazing and the action man, I usually am a bit biased when it comes to 3D stuff save a few exceptions but damn was this impressive! Also adding 9S to Alicia's precious baby list....on that note we really should make a list of characters queen has called her baby, it would be long as hell XD

Joey Cat

Well, in that case, I'm here for it. Stories in this franchise have a way of "branching off" in way that re-contextualize the original narrative. They often require some knowledge of that original narrative to be appreciated, but not always. Almost certain this will be more interesting to come back to after seeing the game, so I hope you get a chance to enjoy both. And I hope I get the chance to enjoy you enjoying both. Plus, you always seemed to have a deeper eye for detail and storytelling sense than most people I watch, so seeing the story like this might not totally drain the fun of the story itself when you get to the game. Nier is one of those where, the deeper you look, the more you see, and the more it hurts.

AlexXis Amadeus

It’s not a direct adaptation ^u^ my friends told me that before I watched this that the intent is to be different to get people to play the game. So don’t worry I will get immersed in the world I just can’t do it yet till I feel good enough to stream a bit more consistently

aliciaxlife

Btw is 2B's VA Mikasas from AOT? They sound so similar

TrinitytheApostle

Oh shit theres a show now? Thats dope as fuck

Charlie baker

Sure hope she played the game before this. otherwise, I guess I’m gonna have to deal with feeling like how manga readers feeling watching people enjoy secondary versions of a story that can only be told fully in its original form… or in Nier’s case across a bullshit variety of media. Aside from that, there’s a chance this isn’t a direct adaptation. Considering how wild Yoko Taro gets, there’s a real chance this will branch off into a different story altogether.

AlexXis Amadeus

Thanks for the episode
