Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King P2

I scream a lot LOL

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King P2

Many of the more "serious" songs that Hobbits do have share quite a bit of similarities with some of the songs that Elves do (plenty of the latter songs are about night & stars, because unlike Men, Elves are more nocturnal preference wise (on account of sun & moon not having yet existed when the Fatherless first woke up back in the day)), at least as far as I have been able to eyeball their lyrics etc

Skebaba

I would suggest watching the Hobbit

Quinn Wertz

Exactly! While there's echoes of that character shown here, a lot of the 'Shakespearean' tragedy of Denethor was lost in the adaptation. The whole idea behind him was that he was a great leader who, by the time he meets Pippin, has just lost the last bit of honor holding together his already damaged mind due to the strain of protecting Gondor for so long and that's when we see him struggle with his choices in the wake of the new war approaching his doorstep. It sucks too, because the actor they got for Denethor, John Noble, was a perfect cast, thanks to his history as an accomplished stage actor, so he was perfectly capable of pulling off that commanding presence mixed with a sympathetic madness that was so present in Denethor in the books.

DeadlyDangerRanger

I liked The Hobbit. It wasn't as good as LotR. But most things aren't as good as LotR. Hobbit is still really good.

DrCatspaw

The film version of Denethor is by far the most bastardized of the characters. While he had his problems, he was by far one of the greatest leaders of men of the age, and if it wasn't for his leadership, Gondor would have fallen already. The movie cuts out the fact that he also has a palantir (the seeing stone), and has been mentally battling Sauron for decades. And while Boromir was his favorite son, he didn't hate Faramir, he just felt that he was too kind hearted for what was needed to be done.

NGL I'd love to hear you sing your own cover of Pippin's song "The Edge of Night" with that reverb effect!

Arian Khalil

Extremely minor nitpick - Why do people in movies always tell archers to "fire"? Bows don't fire. That's guns. That saying comes from guns, where old guns used to require fire to lit to shoot. For archers you'd say loose, or just plain shoot, but not fire.

David Bodor

Shelob is an extremely ancient giant spider who can turn into a very attractive woman. She is fully sapient, which makes the fact that she eats people feel way weirder. Also, Gollum has been in the service of Shelob in the past (kinda as a pet and also to do odd jobs for her).

Gabe

Whelp, since I don't see anyone else mentioning it, i gotta share: The scene with Pippin singing for Denethor, they had given Billy Boyd the lyrics (it was a poem from the book) but he actually wrote the melody himself. And the first time anyone heard it was when he sang it on set filming; after which they told him people watching and in the crew had cried it was so beautiful.

Michael Mangskau

It would be a fun game to drink when they drink. But I like to smoke when they smoke 😁

Matthew Davis

Fun fact about the ugly orc general commanding all the others in battle: he was modeled to look like Harvey Weinstein, because lots of people in the film industry knew he was a monster and loathed him long before it hit mainstream attention.

James S

If there were a book called "The Hobbit", which was totally different from the Hobbit trilogy, one could say it's just a fanservice filled trash bag of a cash grab but because there is not, they seem pretty fun. 👍 Oh, wait... there is?! F....

coolcat_77

If you enjoyed LotR, skipping the Hobbit movies is like skipping the prequel Star Wars trilogy. My daughter liked The Hobbit movies MORE than Lord of the Rings trilogy. But at worst I'd think you'd find them to be in the 6-8 range, with the LotR being 8-10. At best you'd possibly appreciate them more. But there's no way in hell you'd find them to be worse than the new Star Wars trilogy, they don't go that crazy. You get so much more backstory, they're a great ride. 100% watch and all-in on the EEs, just like this. Besides, even if you don't enjoy them as much, they make for better reactions than even LotR I'd imagine, for multiple reasons.

Me: *eating dinner whilst watching* Alicia: "What a gluttonous b!tch." Me: *I look up startled from gorging* Alicia: "To just be eating there as his own son dies. As his men are sent to die" All of a sudden I feen bad for eating lol

Swervin

You can skip the Hobbit movies. There isn't much of any quality there, and they stretched the shortest of the books into three movies.

Cameron Sunken

yep, in terms of enjoyment, they're still great movies

NickAsNickName

Whenever I am trying to kill a spider but can't work up the courage to get close to it, I yell "For Frodo!" and then flatten the damn thing.

Malkalypse

Definitely watch the Hobbit movies. Its sort of the same as the Star Wars prequels, definitely not exactly on par with the original and they do have their faults, but they are great movies nonetheless and way too overhated.

Lucas_Oreki

Definitely watch the Hobbit movies, very fun adventure movies, not great adaptations for about half the trilogy which gives them their infamy, but otherwise very enjoyable and definitely worth a watch! (Extended editions too! No half assing!)

Lewd Angel

The movies do Denethor, and to a lesser degree Faramir, dirty and it's one of the few points of issue I really have with Peter Jackson's adaptation (alongside making the Witch-King able to overpower Gandalf). In the books Denethor was once genuinely a great man, the blood of Numenor running true within him, but he's been directly challenging the will of Sauron for decades via the Palantir but the battle had broken him combined with the distress he's felt in life has turned him mad with paranoia and despair. By the time of the story he was no longer the great lord he'd once been. I'm no filmmaker, maybe the complexity of the character would have been to difficult to show in what time they had. It's still a shame though. His attitude towards Faramir largely comes from two things - firstly Faramir was harder to manipulate than his brother, so Denethor had a harder time controlling him and secondly he considered Faramir to be the "Wizard's pupil" due to his son's close bond with Gandalf who had been his mentor teaching him about history and lore. Denethor also had a bitterness towards Aragorn who he knew had come to Gondor many years before under the name Thorongil and fought heroically in the Kingdom's military when they where both young. Denethor seemed to believe that Thorongil/Aragorn had taken his father's affections away from him and had a lot of resentment towards him. I may be misremembering but I also believe that Thorongil advised Ecthelion (Denethor's dad) to heed the counsel of Gandalf while Denethor recommended Saruman. So seeing as how Saruman turned traitor that may have only increased Denethor's feelings of inadequacy when compared to Aragorn. As for Faramir - the ring failed to visibly tempt him (as he was in the movie). No doubt it tried but Faramir's own personal integrity comes first to him so the ring couldn't affect him as it did others and he swiftly made it clear to Frodo that he had no interest in trying to wield the evil thing. TL;DR: Denethor had greatness in him but by the time of the story he's been driven mad from paranoia and despair and his spirit is broken. P.S. Éowyn is Théoden's niece not daughter :P Théodwyn, the mother of Éowyn and Éomer, was Théoden's younger sister. After their father Éomund died and Théodwyn passed away not long after, Théoden took both children in to raise them alongside his own son Théodred.

Lazy Swordsman

Fun personal fact, when I was in High School I did Theoden's speech to the riders in front of the theatre class and got picked for the lead role in our play that year. Was one time when my parents pushed me to do something I wasn't wholly comfortable, because they saw how I did enjoy things similar to theatre. While I didn't pursue acting or theatre as a job, it was by and far, the best year of high school I ever had.

Please watch the hobbit movies they are great and I think you will love them

Tyler Ennis

The hobbit movies are worth watching to be sure. If you ever get a chance to read the book and the LotR books as well they are completely worth it after the movies but most of the people mad at the Hobbit movies are mad because they are either not living up to this trilogy or they don't live up to the book. Also keep an eye out for Steven Colbert in the second movie as he is a huge LotR nerd and got a cameo.

MaddMind

I admit, I check out a little with the "Seek the Army of the Dead" plot. Kinda convenient that an unbeatable army for hire was just there, I guess. Wouldn't have felt like so much of a detour to me if somehow they'd been subtly pre-established.

Sawnderz

Trivia: At 1h16m30s in this video, when Theoden's riding along the front ranks of the Rohirrim giving his speech and rattling his sword off their spears? The speech was scripted. Him riding across the line *may* have been scripted. Rattling his sword off the spears was *not* scripted, that's something actor Bernard Hill (sadly passed just this year, may he rest in peace) came up with on his own. This is a video about his acting in this role: https://youtu.be/lgQqYTH1lQQ

Silvia Dragoness

The actor somehow made eating a tomato on of THE MOST off-putting thing that is permanently seared into my mind. I wonder what the director notes were XD: " I want you to eat this tomato but make it just wrong"

Obligatory "JRR Tolkien's prose is immaculate" bit, here's the description of Grond: The drums rolled louder. Fires leaped up. Great engines crawled across the field; and in the midst was a huge ram, great as a forest-tree a hundred feet in length, swinging on mighty chains. Long had it been forging in the dark smithies of Mordor, and its hideous head, founded of black steel, was shaped in the likeness of a ravening wolf; on it spells of ruin lay. Grond they named it, in memory of the Hammer of the Underworld of old. Great beasts drew it, Orcs surrounded it, and behind walked mountain-trolls to wield it. But about the Gate resistance still was stout, and there the knights of Dol Amroth and the hardiest of the garrison stood at bay. Shot and dart fell thick; siege-towers crashed or blazed suddenly like torches. All before the walls on either side of the Gate the ground was choked with wreck and with bodies of the slain; yet still driven as by a madness more and more came up. Grond crawled on. Upon its housing no fire would catch; and though now and again some great beast that hauled it would go mad and spread stamping ruin among the orcs innumerable that guarded it, their bodies were cast aside from its path and others took their place. Grond crawled on. The drums rolled wildly. Over the hills of slain a hideous shape appeared: a horseman, tall, hooded, cloaked in black. Slowly, trampling the fallen, he rode forth, heeding no longer any dart. He halted and held up a long pale sword. And as he did so a great fear fell on all, defender and foe alike; and the hands of men drooped to their sides, and no bow sang. For a moment all was still.

Linnaeus

1) John Noble absolutely kills it as Denethor, but this is one of the areas where I have to take some issue with how they simplified a character from the books (he's a lot more nuanced, and his despair comes later and feels more organic), even though I know they did it so that Gandalf would end up in charge to keep the narrative focused on the main cast. 2) The movies never really tell you explicitly, but I like that they SHOW that the Nazgul project an aura of magical fear and despair around them. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I strongly suspect that the whole "Fear Aura of Undead" mechanic in D&D that spread to a lot of video games later had its origins in LotR (Tolkien describes a less potent form of the effect to other undead creatures like the Barrow Wights and the Army of the Dead).

Linnaeus

My take way from this is rich a literal gigachad like aragon or sam levels! I would say alicia lucked out with him buy honestly it is mostly her being a gigachad too!

Azi

The Hobbit movies are good, they just fall short when comparing them to these masterpieces. Which is honestly unfair. If these films are a 10/10 then the hobbit movies are easily a 7 or 8/10

Ben Tuttle

Make me wish for a series that reflects the books! As there seems to be some characters worth exploring! But this depiction of Denethor than go Fuck himself!

Azi

You will wanna watch The Hobbit series. It’s a good watch, it also has one thing missing from LOTR. 🐉 💎 👑

Yaboi7117

W Fiancé

Bloby Doo

I wanna note: in the novel, Denethor DID NOT send Faramir out on a suicide attack. Faramir got injured as he was trying to protect his retreating troops, hit by the "Black Breath" of the Nazgul (basically... the nazgul have a poisonous breath). It also wasn't Gandalf ALONE who helped the retreating troops, but Faramir's uncle, Denethor's brother-in-law. Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, and his Knights, who charged. Imrahil is a character that was cut from the movie, together with the rest of hte leaders of the Fiefdoms of Gondor (short explanation: in the novel, the beacons are used to call the Fiefdoms to do their duty, Rohan is called via a massenger delivering a red arrow) Imrahil's sister , Finduilas, had married Denethor, but after Faramir's birth had begun to weaken substantially, which had already caused Denethor to be alienated from Faramir, and she died 5 years later, and Denethor became even more grim than he had been before. In the novels, Denethor also is more complex. And he had a powerful mind... He used the Palantir and had duels of hte mind with Sauron. Yet Sauron could not break his will, and instead drove him to despair by allowing him to see specific things that would make Denethor despair.

The Silent One

The Hobbit movies are fine. The last one's kind of a slog. I wish they adapted it into a TV series, but overall enjoyable.

Chalk3000000

A reminder about Merry from the first movie: Merry and Pippin were trained in sword fighting by Boromir, the greatest swordsman in Gondor. For Merry, compared to that, those orcs were light work.

Tanner Chrisler

Another cool fact, the army of rohan that rode on minas tirith was mostly women that dressed up and had makeup to make them look like men. They were all experienced horse riders. So this film broke the record for the most extras used for film making to make the army look that more realistic.

SilverWolf1293

It is one movie instead of 3 (though it has a kinda weird transition from the first to the 2nd movie), they cut a lot of the non-story relevant stuff, the colors are more LotR-ish...just way better imo

Tipsy

Yea you should watch The Hobbit trilogy.

Jimify

You know they did an amazing fucking job with the extended version when you have a hard time remembering what scenes were added and what scenes were from the original lmao

WillGlacier

thank you, i have not heard of this until now

Yagi di Hoshi

i would like if more anime i actually saw would share this type of forethought in adaptation

Yagi di Hoshi

ditto !

Yagi di Hoshi

yaaaas, please do the hobbit. maybe not the extended for that

Whats always been amazing to me is that there are no bad characters in these movies. None of them are truly irrelevant or unneeded. All play their parts and their parts are played perfectly by their actors. Absolute peak cinema

At the beginning of this part with the steward sitting there stuffing his face, you gotta remember that he started eating right after basically telling his son to go die on that mission, and you see the scene where they’re charging and he still eating, think of the amount of time it took for them to get all those men ready to depart, for that farewell parade and everything, had to of been at least a couple hours, that’s how long that steward sat there stuffing is fucking face

Ben Gross

Please do watch the Hobbit movies, I think they're almost as good as the LOTR series and was hoping for you to get to them as well. Hope you do and thanks for the reactions!

Siva Stealth

I think you should watch the hobbit too ! They are important to the lore too !

Django Yvel Lirssen

The Charge of the Rohirrim is and always will be my favorite scene in the entire trilogy. Theoden basically screaming, "We're all gonna die, but we're gonna go down swinging, damnit!". In the book, it talks about how the cavalry is going full speed right at the orcs, but none of the riders can overtake Theoden. Man's riding right out at the front like a KING!

Momo

never has a film capture the power of a cavalry charge so perfectly. Its not just the wall of horse flesh and men colliding with the side of the enemy army. Its the intimidation factor, the way the orcs panic and break lines. its soo good.

MenacingScone

I would say to watch the Hobbit movies.

Makix217

i love the hobbit but its not as good (hard to be as good as this, they are still solid)

Jacob

Billy Boyd (aka. Pippin) actually wrote that little song he sang for Denethor himself. Peter Jackson told him to wing it and thats exactly what Billy did. He used his own creative talent and beautiful voice for that short and beautiful song.

SilverWolf1293

extra bit regarding Eowyn: The way the book for ROTK is structured the first half follows Aragon and his merry band and the second half follows Frodo's perspective. But with the Rohirram a focus character is just a random rohan soldier from the readers perspective. A soldier we follow through and don't know is Eowyn till she reveals herself.

Random3x

That mans eating made me so disgusted with people eating for a long time

musky and moist Mike

I'm hoping for the hobbit, love the idea of a dwarves focus story, plus i just like dwarvish related stuff

james blaire

I hope Alicia watches the X-Men movies at least the first 2, First Class and Days of Future past along with Logan before she checks out Deadpool and Wolverine

Jaffar Black Fang

I think you should go for the hobbit movies. If you're watching the anime why not? View it as a completely different thing altogether. The issue people have with them is while the trilogy at least tried to be a somewhat faithful adaption to the source, the Hobbit has too much made up or padded material to claim that in any way. The studio got way more involved after the trilogy's success, wanting 3 movies which required that filler. PJ only got involved halfway through, and in contrast to these movies that have a lot of practical fim-making, it's a lot of CGI, and tried to have have a similar tone to these while being based on a children's book.

Zip The Turtle

Pirates of the Caribbean would be awesome! But I wouldn’t recommend something strong if you wanna make the first movie a drinking game, most of the main pirates are canonically alcoholics.

Fun Fact: The giant Wolf's head Battering Ram is named Grond. Which roughly translates to "Very Weighty" in like a ponderous kind of way. It's name is a Pun on it being Heavy.

Brian Todd

I feel like the people that tell you to not watch them are forgetting that we are watching you watch them, it's a different experience compared to just sitting down and watching the movies on their own. I say watch them, I hated the Hobbit movies, but that doesn't mean I will hate watching you watch them.

Okoga

My favourite thing about the scene where Gandalf beats Denethor with his staff, is that none of the guards even attempt to stop him. They're just stood in the background like "about damn time someone did that" XD

Swan Ronson

For the question about doing the Hobbit trilogy, I will say they aren’t the absolute artistic, peak masterpieces of the first 3 LOTR movies. However I still think they are definitely worth the watch and have their moments as well, it’s just one of those things where the first 3 were so good it’s hard to stand up against them. I’d for one definitely love to see a reaction to them💕

NekoSoophie!

You win the Internet for today. God, I love that song.

BakaSama

Yes, Shelob is the spawn of Ungoliant, a colossal spider monster of Unlight from the First Age and Shelob would probably be something of the magnitude of a Balrog. The Spiders of Mirkwood in the Hobbit are also spawn of Ungoilant, albeit of a lesser order.

BakaSama

The problem imo with The Hobbit was they made a *Small* book and story into three parts. Two movies would have been perfect (the first one was mostly faithful to the source), but the studio wanted 3 films for the money.

Crescent Method

The Hobbit films are enjoyable enough; they're controversial because they aren't as faithful (by a fairly wide margin), and a lot of the differences serve to both make them more like Lord of the Rings, and stretching them into three movies. For context, the Hobbit was an illustrated children's book presented as an episodic travelogue, and clocked in at 95k words; whereas LoTR is Epic High-Fantasy and clocks in somewhere north of 480k words.

dz1jgmeyer

Theoden is such an emo king, he doesn't fight for victory or hope, he rides to battle for death and the END OF THE WORLD!! XD

leviathan_13

The issue with Faramir and Denethor extends beyond the roles of father and son. Denethor is the ruling steward of Gondor. Faramir is also the captain who serves Denethor. Even if he were to disobey his father, if Faramir were to decline Denethor's - his lord's - demand to recapture Osgiliath, it would effectively be treason. Faramir has no choice but to obey the steward's command. Either die following orders or risk getting thrown in prison and/or executed for treason.

Some Guy on the Internet

trilogy was better than the book, honestly. a lot more drama and action

Karl Wikman

The ride of the Rohirram is a truly significant moment in LOTR. As they ride knowing full well they are going to likely die. They are riding to ensure a future for men. They have overcome the curse of Morgoth (OG dark lord and Saurons old boss) who instilled a fear of death in humans. They ride for no other reason than to ensure good will win the day.

Random3x

Fun Fact: The Ride of Rohan scene is not only comprised of mainly female extras, those in the front were also people who actually read the book because they wanted to try and capture the scene as much as possible.

Connor Clemmons

Peter Jackson used to live in area where there were these huge tunneller spiders living under his house. He used those spiders as basis for this one, and the man kept going until it was the thing of his worst nightmares.

Yadokari

I think Noble's performance as Denethor is pure perfection.

Zip The Turtle

Denethor permanently put me off eating tomato's because of that one perfectly horrible scene.

Shroomy

Doing same commentary as for first part; 7:52 Pippin singing while Denathor eats and the war is going on the background is so hauntingly beautiful. 32:57-35:00, 49:05-50:29 This part is extended cut and in theatrical version we don't see Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli or the ghosts until they show up with the ships way later! And I really liked that! Now it shows that the ghosts agreed to help. And how they took over those ships! (Sidenote; If this was an anime and I was the director, I would have shown a flashback after Aragorn and others show up with the ships, instead of what goes on) 1:24:20 Billy Butcher, sorry meant to say Eomer, get's it done!

V_VMat

I'm not gonna say don't watch the Hobbit movies, I'm gonna say they're a bad adaptation and I won't be watching them with you. But if the metrics make sense, watch it.

Jobbe Smit

I don't know who, but someone MUST have at some point in history realized how effective catapulting heads to demoralize the enemy is, short of actually beating them to death with their dead comrade's severed limbs I don't believe there's a more effective way

Cyric Sherburne

If you mean the Maple FIlms Edit then absolutely Yes, so much better than the normal version

Tipsy

Fun fact : the director has arachnophobia and during the screening for the spider parts he sat all the way in the back with a pillow.

Robert C. Dona

Sam defeating Shelob(the spider) is an absoloutly INSANE feat because iirc, Shelob is part-demon & in the general ballpark of Gandalf & Balrog(fire demon).

You should give hobbit a try , definitely, I mean more of gandalf eeh? Who doesn't wanna watch more of him in the movies if they can?

jason remy

I think you should give the hobbit movies a shot. I enjoyed them for the most part, but you should form your own opinions.

Hoodedkiller25

Hobbit is a good movie, maybe it is not top tier as LotR and the cgi is not the best, but it is worth it, fun and you see more of that world. Just like the anime movie, it's worth to watch.

The way I see it if You watch the Lord of the Rings and enjoy the setting and story enough, you should watch the Hobbit because it's sort of a prequel and it tells you about some key events that lead up to Lord of the Rings and also just shows HOW MUCH of a badass Bilbo was in his hay day.

Raskilion

Largest Cavalry Charge shown in any movie, iirc.

The Hobbit trilogy is... complicated. Half the content is amazing and brilliant, the other half is... unnecessary padding at best. There are some fantastic fan edits where they cut it down to basically 1 movie and it's a vast improvement.

Eowen: Courage, Merry. Courage for our friends (when they find our broken bodies) Eowen sought death among battle as she had lost will to live. When Theoden faced overwhelming numbers of Orcs, his heart faltered and he was almost consumed by fear. He defeated that fear within him after a moment and sought to dispel this fear from men who followed him. Theoden yelled Death, not for Orcs, for himself or anyone. He yelled at Death, of whom Men fear! Men who are jealous of Elves Immortality for they were blessed with Immortality among land while Men were given blessing of Mortality and passing of their spirit out of lands when they die. He yelled for Death to greet them with open arms and receive Soldiers of Rohan, for they would not fear Death, they would walk onward and be ready to greet it!

Fresh in from pt 1, lessgooooo! Having watched you go through Star Wars and a few of the rougher MCU films, I bet you’d enjoy the Hobbit trilogy. We’ve got our issues with it, but a lot of that comes from our own preconceived expectations, honestly. Still a lot of fun, lots of cool stuff to enjoy about them.

i'd suggest looking into the hobbit trilogy, it's basically bilbo's story telling events 60 years before the events of LOTR.
