2025-01-09 04:58:28 +0000 UTCSPOILERS FOR ARC NAMES: They don’t go into a huge amount of detail on the demon castle arc, so I assume that might get roughly 2-3 episodes, then the other arcs as well I assume up to the jeju arc? Not sure if it’ll finish that tho. I assume the red orc arc will take up an episode or so, and the episode where he defeats whatshisface demon king guy will probably end with him waking his mom. There’s also the rank up exam, but that’ll take half an episode tops. I don’t think it’s that fast in all honesty.

2025-01-08 16:29:12 +0000 UTCI normally don't like anime that have video game stat and quest screens pop up. It feels like a crutch for weak storytelling. I watched season 1 because so many seemed to love it. For me, it was just barely good enough to finish, mostly forgettable, overall mid. This episode was better, I hope these animators are treated better than the 100 girlfriends team, because they put in work for this episode. If season 2 follows this trend, and uses less invisible game screens, I think I'll like it better than season 1.

2025-01-05 23:57:56 +0000 UTCI could write an entire essay to be honest, I am a massive video game person, both playing and design, though it has been some time since I watched the first season of the show so I don't have all the details fresh in my mind, I'll try to remember as much as I can: - First one I remember - The goblins - They look basic asf, like really bad, but they have super elaborate movesets. That's not how video games are designed generally speaking. Basic looking enemies are programed in very basic ways and vice versa, elaborate enemies get elaborate movesets. It felt weirdly wrong, but not a deal-breaker yet. - Player strategy - The people who clear dungeons fight with 0 strategy or planning. Normally in games you have planning phases in dungeons, where you talk roles over and everyone has a task, there's a person who pulls mobs, there's people who do damage, people who tank, people who heal, people who focus large groups with AoE attacks, people who do single target damage, etc...none of that exists here, even on the island with all the ants, where supposedly this professional invasion force went in, they all just go free for all with zero formations or designated roles or tactis, there's NO strategy whatsoever. This is for example something Log Horizon got right, even though that has a lot of bad things too, but they made the planner a key figure in every raid. Even though the character was weak as F alone, he had knowledge, and in a game, knowledge is power. Teamwork is key. This genuinely took me out of the show super bad. It's just irredeemable how dumb everyone in this universe is. Everyone is so focused on power they forget how to use it. Not to mention outside of video game logic, how martial arts and strategy would be a way to increase your power even if your 'power level' cannot change. Like, come on. THINK Mark, THINK! - Environmental design - The first instance he goes to solo level in, is a dilapidated Subway system and there's wolves and goblins in it, but why? Why are they in a subway system? We know dungeons can look in a wide variety of ways, so why are there goblins and wolves in a modern subway system? Why are they working together? Why does the subway system look so empty and plain with no decoration or props at all? In a video game you'd have goblin tents and fire pits and maybe the wolves would be theirs and you'd see some goblin wolf riders, or maybe they'd be against one another, but nope, nothing here. The instance legit looks like someone put it together in 2 minutes because they were in a hurry. Like, some poor overworked game designer needed to create a place to test stuff in, and it's never meant to make it into the final product, it was there just for alpha testers. There's like 0 design behind it. - Mob behavior - Then there's how the mobs attack. I remember how enemies would encircle people and attack one at a time. That's not how mobs work in video games with very few exceptions. Like, it's a Hollywood trope for bad guys to attack one at a time, so that'd be fine normally, but if you take this much terminology from video games, at least make the mobs attack like how they would in video games. - Then there's aggro - Normally in games, mobs start to fight when you aggro them. Otherwise they're on pre-set patrol paths or they stand still. That's not how the wolves in the instance worked at all. - There's also the leveling system, the items, the quest rewards, they just feel plain wrong. I am sure there's a lore reason for it all, but it just feels off compared to how those work in video games. PS - I also vaguely remember how Episode 2 should have been Episode 1, because instead of showing a bunch of things, they just tell us about it, which sucks for pacing.
