When little Linlin ate her birthday Semlas notice the size difference in the Semla she is offered by the other kids and the Semla that she actually puts in her mouth... a good hint on what happened before she saw that nobody is there anymore.

In reality while she was a caring person, she was a person that had zero parenting skills and instead of disciplining she placated Linlin's worst behavior at the expense of everyone else... and as a result she reinforced her bad behavior as "acceptable". And it's not like Linlin was a bad girl from the start - she absolutely loved Mother Carmel and was an open sponge to her teachings. Unfortunately, because mother wouldn't tell her "no", she ended up learning that being a monster was acceptable and, well, that's how we ended up with Big Mom.
