the most tragic moment in this movie for me was in that flashback right before winter soldier kills howard stark, howard says 'sargeant barnes'. cos he knew him. he was in the war with him. so for him its seeing this guy he hasnt seen since the 40s. just that familiarity and confusion was so tragic.

I think Tony was wrong about the avengers needing oversight because that just shifts the responsibility. Tony says he shut down the weapon manufacturing when he realized what it was doing. This isn't shutting it down, the accords would be like him turning his weapons over to someone else. Cap has the experience dealing with organizations that have agendas and it never works. It sounds nice giving the UN control over deployment, but that delay or even denial puts the entire world if not the universe at risk.

I love that each side has a point, there's no one clearly in the right. Tony had a point about the Avengers needing oversight, and I think Steve was wrong to outright dismiss the idea. On the other hand, Tony was wrong to sign the accords as they were written. Should have had his lawyers look it over first cause you just know that now he's basically just another missile for the government to point and fire at whoever they want

You are confusing "keeping in check" with "giving others control over you" The accords represent surrendering to the governments will. Cap got a lot more out of this than Tony did. Again this is not a peter whos never fought anyone, 616 peter nearly beats the entire fantastic four with the exact level of on the job experience as this peter. Should point out winter soldier has more experience then cap and is also super human like cap but gets done up just like cap wouldve by spiderman in the movie. Peter has reflexes so fine tuned its very unlikely cap would ever touch him. And cap is very very far below spidey, dude can lift several dozen tons and move several times faster both in speed and reaction time. Tony wasn't right and neither was captain america either. You have to remember most of the characters are still human besides Vision, they still have human emotions just as they do fancy superpowers. The grief and guilt they had pushed back from all the calamities and casualties created by themselves like Vision stated in his equation, have caught up to them. Clearly Tony was lacking mentally with his depression towards his own family so at the beginning of the movie Tony is already reacting emotionally based on that scene by the elevator, otherwise he wouldn't have came prepared when the SOS came in. Cap responds to things in a righteous freedom way. He is right though about the government, they would make a mockery of them and he knows that first hand because he didnt get to be the captain america he is now without breaking the rules and not obeying direct orders, he might be a solider but he isn't a dunce. Zemo created the in-fighting the moment Hydra wanted to reveal that Bucky was still alive and when Black widow released the files on the internet. The other side characters were just to hype the fans and give it that marvel pizazz like they all have coming up. It's exactly how Alicia described it in hear youtube intro, it's an emotional Rollercoaster.

Tell me, what exactly did Cap accomplish in Civil War, other than tearing up the Avengers and making his followers criminals? All he did was get played like a fiddle and lose. Even worse is you look at future films/TV and see Scarlet Witch became one of the most powerful villains who killed not just people from the main universe, but tons of people in the multiverse. Tony was trying to avoid that exact scenario by putting strong people in check.

Because Tony was to blame. He was tricked into thinking Bucky was the villain, but handed over decision making control to the government. He once again tried pushing responsibility to someone else just like he did with Ultron. The same government that decided to try and kill Bucky on sight, and didn't believe Tony when he found out the truth. Captain was correct that the safest hands were their own, and the others attacked him for it. Here is an idea. Instead of Tony being for the governments beck and call at the airport he went to Cap and said "Ok. If you know where this guy is let us get him as a team, and then you come with us after" Steve would probably take that deal if it meant the right thing getting done.

Wanda could have achieved moving Crossbones like diagonally away from the building, but it was a heat of the moment very fast timeframe to do so. So the explosion near the building while accidental still failed at trying to handle the situation with 0 casualties to the civilians as possible. Then that was like the excuse the government can use to show the Avengers failure to stop the casualties, even if accidental, to catapult the Accords, using all the evidence they can.

Honestly, Tony was completely right in this movie. Sure, he was tricked into thinking Bucky was the villain, but Captain America not only got people killed, but destroyed the Avengers for nothing. You can make the argument that no one could've known the villain would kill off all the super solders, but that was the whole point of the film. Cap went on a rampage destroying buildings, highways and an airport based on what he thought was right, not facts. The only thing Steve accomplished was making him and his followers criminals at the end of the film, but for some reason Tony is blamed.

The line about the Empire Strikes Back feels kind of forced, and I say this as someone who is around Peter's age demographic. I've met more people who have seen Star Wars than haven't. It just doesn't feel like a natural line at all to refer to one of the most culturally pervasive and highest grossing franchises of all time as if it's a niche standalone movie. Even people who haven't watched it are familiar with the IP. The line was probably written to make Peter seem younger, but as someone around that age, no one would say that. A much more natural line would be "you know how in Star Wars..." They should have picked a movie that was culturally pervasive at the time and still considered a classic, but not super watched among younger people, something like Rocky, or Rambo. Star Wars just doesn't fall under that umbrella.

Yeah, Cap learned that HYDRA was behind the deaths of Tony's parents back in "Winter Soldier" during the scene with computer Zola in the bunker. Cap didn't know for certain that Bucky was the one they used to do it, but he still knew HYDRA assassinated Howard, and the fact that he apparently never told Tony afterwards is messed up.

The one thing that agitated me about this movie was that none of the anti accords people challenged Ross's little power point presentation. Just ask, what would have happened in all those scenarios if the avengers waited for the bureaucrats to send them in? New York would have been nuked, and the portal wouldn't have been closed, leaving an alien invasion beach head. The heli carriers were government sanctioned, so I don't get how that is a point against them. Socovia... Ok, Tony did make Ultron. Putting a leash on him I get. And terrorists would have a deadly bio weapon. The only mistake Wanda made was she let the wrong people blow up. If she had shielded cap and her and let the poor people in the street die, none of these politicians would care. But I get it, the hero's can't point out the obvious. It would ruin the premise of the movie. Edit: I should clarify that I still love the movie. Edit2: Just realised Spider Man is 15 and fighting for the government, therefore is technically a child soldier. Way to go Tony.

It's hard to know. Deadpool 1 should've been watched before this one release date wise, but with the release of Deadpool 3, it has become more attached to mainstream Marvel movies, so it should be included in the Marvel watchlist. Especially during that fight with Falcon and Bucky his sense werent there or neither would land a hit. sorry but Tony being in the wrong about Bucky being framed, does not mean he was in the wrong with the rest of the situation at all. I think being super has ultimately gotten to Steve's head and at this point he had become extremely arrogant in his thinking. The fact that Steve said the accords were not taking responsibility is pretty funny when they showed multiple instances of Steve and his Avengers doing some crazy shit and not sticking around the help out in the aftermath. In that respect of the main issue of this movie Tony was definitely in the right, he was just unfortunately being manipulated by Secretary Ross who is a major asshole. The Ant Man thing also makes no sense because Tony's dad was not the person at SHIELD that was trying to steal Pim's work it was that other guy. And the research into it got shut down after that as well. So Tony kind of catching some strays on that one.

ALOT of character moments, set up and pay offs all coming together, the writing is superb. yes, alot of things could be resolved in such a way that it this movie coulda been avoided, but thats the thing....these characters were written sooo well that they couldn't, their personal drives and personalities lead them to making certain unavoidable choices, and lead us through this narrative in such a powerful way. And it just keeps on giving. Truly a masterclass in writing.

My favorite thing is how conniving Ross was. He almost certainly made sure that lady was out in the hall waiting for Tony. After all, she worked for the state dept, and he was secretary of state. Tony's awakening to empathy was intense; he flew to the middle east to end a massacre himself the moment he saw it on TV back in Iron Man 1, so I'm certain that Ross knew that if he set off Tony's trauma and humanitarian instincts, then provided him a solution, he'd leap at it.

My problem with Cap in this one, is that he's kind of a hypocrite. Because in age of Ultron and even Winter Soldier he was really mad that people kept secret from him and after Tony created Ultron he told him they were supposed to be better than shield that they should not keep secret from each other, he said to Tony face whilst he knew that Hydra had Tony's parent killed and his friend may have potentially been responsible for it, as a matter of fact at the beginning of Age of Ultron they were still hunting the remains of Hydra but he never shared that very crucial information to Tony now did he? So I guess it's okay when he's the one who hides secrets but other shouldn't and ultimately It's not Tony's secret that nearly ended the avengers it was his.

Ok, first the villains. Crossbones is a hired thug/mercenary who primarily worked for the Red Skull as a part of a group called the Skeleton Crew and was a persistent thorn in Cap's side. Zemo aka Baron Helmut Zemo in the comics is not the sympathetic villain he is here. He is a major Avengers and Captain America foe. Zemo's father was Baron Heinrich Zemo and responsible for Bucky's "death" that lead to him becoming the Winter Soldier. Zemo's most notorious deed is the formation of an incarnation of the Super Villain group known as the Masters of Evil that successfully invaded the Avengers Mansion and nearly destroyed the Avengers. Zemo then later formed a Super Hero Team called the Thunderbolts during a time when the Avengers were dead. This group was formed from members of the Masters of the Evil with the intent of eventually taking over the world. Zemo however didn't count on his villainous colleagues choosing to actually become real Super heroes. Now, as to the Comic Book Civil War...It was indeed a conflict between factions lead by Cap and Tony revolving around the U.S.'s Regulation of Super Heroes. The main differences is that in the comics it all started with a group of young Super Heroes trying to capture a roided up D-List Super Villain that resulted in an explosion killing several hundred people including an entire Elementary School. Also, in the comics, Tony's side utilized some "questionable" methods including putting non-compliant Heroes in an extradimensional prison and employing a clone of Thor that eventually killed veteran Avenger, Black Goliath. Oh and Spider-Man started on Team Iron Man but eventually switched sides to Team Captain America.

Yeah this is one thing i highly disagree on with a good number of spidey fans. Andrew was a great spiderman, Tom is a great Peter, Toby wasn't good as either. He was intelligent but he wasn't an inventor or tinkerer like Peter usually is, he never quipped at his opponents and thats one of spidey's main things, and he didn't invent his own web fluid, he just had it naturally which was just kinda weird. Plus they really tried to pass a grown ass man as a highschooler and jeez did that not work. Thor was dead in the Comics, to be exact. He came back post Civil War and was... not pleased. The Movie Civil War did a better job than the Comics likely because they learned from the Comics which started with the same concept of trying to present both sides as having a point and then..... well. One side started building prisons in the Negative Zone which was specfically mentioned to be well.... long term exposure was the same as torture, so they started building torture prisons.... The film kept both sides as having a point you can see Tony's side, you can see Cap's side and while I side with Cap in both versions, this version is better balanced

And experience really doesn't make a difference with this vast a stat mismatch, Spiderman has rarely ever lost in his dozens of fights with wolverine. toms spiderman is probably the part of the mcu after this that bugs me the most because its everything spiderman isnt and thats because people interpret off of past spiderman movies. Peter has historically been a fiercely independent headstrong hothead with alot of empathy but a tendency towards self deprecation. The raimi movies and these characterize him as if peter were miles morales in that hes significantly less self reliant or confident aswell as being alot more of a relaxed positive person. I watch these movies as a comic nerd who prefers Marvel... and I know this shit is fucking niche and layered and obfuscated by needless fake science terminology bull and such... and the movies go out of their way to explain things... eventually... and I assumed that was necessary... The kid in the Iron Man mask in 2 was retroactively made Peter when Marvel got the ok to put Spidey in these movies. An oversight panel for the Avengers would have the exact same problem.

Oh my main problem isn't that. What brakes the effect for me is that he gets triggered by a dude that's learning Russian on it's own from a book, without anyone helping him practice the pronunciation and such (and he says those words to him in a very broken Russian). So either he was "programmed" using the same broken Russian, while allegedly in Russia, or he gets triggered by any random sounds that can vaguely remind him of those words. It just brake the illusion a lot, for me at least. It's also quite annoying when they showed that they can invest into having a good Romanian "conversation", because that market scene was pretty damn good.

The thing I really like about this movie is the concept of doing the right thing through the wrong means and vice versa. Cap was doing the wrong thing for the right reasons while stark was doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Or at least, that's was my take from it. Though I guess that's a perspective based concept. Don't think either side is wrong.

And they're flawed. Let's examine them, shall we? Harlem - That was entirely Ross' fuck up. Banner's whole thing is he wants to be left alone, and 80% of the Hulk's rampages would end if Ross got a hobby besides antagonizing a rage beast. New York - Loki was leading the invasion one way or another, and if not him, than someone else. The government's solution was to nuke the city, which would have killed EVERYONE in New York and left the portal open for alien reinforcements. Sokovia - In Stark's very limited defense, he didn't create Ultron. He started the framework, which then promptly finished itself. And regardless of the damage Sokovia itself caused, it was going to be a global extinction event. And lastly, the incident that kicked off the accords was Crossbones getting a bioweapon (which was safely recovered), and then suicide bombing himself to take out a few dozen people. Sorry, but that's business as usual. And let's be honest, if The Avengers hadn't 'made' Ultron, someone else would have, but without Avengers to stop him. Contrast that to the comics, where the New Warriors were filming an episode of their reality tv show, didn't scout the situation properly, and the villain blew up a school of innocent bystanders. The point of the SRA was "Hey, these were untrained kids that did this, properly trained heroes like the Avengers wouldn't have done this!" Plus the villains robbed a store, or a bank. Minion level shit. They didn't NEED to engage. But with the Sokovia Accords, every time the heroes intervened easily saved a thousand lives for every life lost.

Dude you’re missing one key detail in the “You killed my son” thread. It’s not about him letting Ultron kill them, the point is that Tony CREATED Ultron and he is responsible for the destruction of Sokovia… and all the people that died in it. That’s where Tony’s conflict on the accords comes, his guilt and yes he’s right to feel guilty because yes it is his fault. But also, the Sokovia accords weren’t trigged by one incident, it was all and every incident where the Avengers caused destruction like Sokovia, like Washington, like Lagos and New York. So yes while there was the Stanford incident in the comics, the point in this film is that there were multiple incidents.

I have a lot to say, and none of this will be spoilers. This movie violently shook my ratings of each character. This is the point that knocked Tony from my top 3 spot. At first I thought this was a huge change to his character, but the more I thought about it the more it made sense. Why would Tony Stark, an anti-government, anti-authority type, side with the accords? Because of Ultron. That disaster was entirely his fault. He tried to pass the job off and nearly caused the destruction of the planet. At this point he is tired of carrying the guilt of everything on his shoulders and wants someone else to take it. Let them blame the government if something goes wrong. This is also not a change for Captain Americas character either. People seem to peg him as someone that follows the rules, but was that really the case? He follows his own moral compass and carries the weight of his actions on his shoulders. He will work with others if the goals align or if someone needs help. Natasha said it should be ok if they have "one hand on the wheel". She should know better. It only takes someone else to jerk the wheel and now you are careening into a ditch. The government, shield, and hydra have constantly made everything worse. They chastise the Avengers for New York, but who was the one that attempted to nuke it? They talk about the 3 carriers in Washington, but who fricken sent them in the air in the first place? The only point they had was with Ultron who again was on Tony trying to give control and responsibility to someone else. Thankfully, the Tony in the movies is redeemable. By the end of this film he starts to understand the mistake of the accords. The comics, though? Not so much. Tony becomes outright villainous there, even killing other heroes. It’s even worse because the accords in the comics require heroes to reveal their true identities, putting their loved ones at risk. Spider man wants to sign the accords? He better be able to protect Aunt May 24/7 from all manner of supervillain. I still love this movie, but damn if it didn't shift people around on my list. It put Captain America at my number 1 because he is such a real one. Hawkeye is my number 2 being the most human with so much to risk, and his arrows always surprise me.

Fun fact! Chris Evans performed that helicopter stunt himself, and actually tore a ligament/muscle as I recall, got a mild injury from it. Same thing happened to RDJ in Iron Man 3 in the "Barrel of Monkeys" scene after Air Force One blew up, he injured his ankle iirc.
