2025-02-03 06:16:41 +0000 UTCEgg prices in the US are sky-high because of long-running issues with the Avian flu and how dangerous it is/rapidly it spreads with American factory farm conditions, and the fact the main way the American government tries to control/prevent the spread is by "depopulating" (slaughtering) entire farm populations whenever an outbreak is detected.

The threat of the avian flu reaching pandemic status is a current issue and something like 20 million chickens have been slaughtered due to Avian flu being detected in their flocks in like, the past year (and more than 150 million in the past 10 years). There's a lot of concern about it crossing over to other species besides fowl (both other farm animals and/or humans), as well. The avian flu is a real issue/threat, but its as big a problem as it is because the main way they've been dealing with it for YEARS is just mass slaughter of potentially infected birds, but not taking more proactive measures to protect unaffected populations.

Was supposed to be due to potential avian flu (or something like that) but that is one of the reasons eggs are going off the rails, at least in the US. I believe that any flock with even one infected was killed off entirely. A good way to ensure the prevention of a spread of disease, but killing like a hundred million chickens will naturally result in a very short supply of eggs and chicken meat for a good while.

2025-02-01 22:11:46 +0000 UTCI’m not sure why eggs are so expensive. The fact that they’re a natural byproduct of chickens means that they should be cheap as dirt. I have a friend who has chickens and sells the eggs for maybe 2 to 3 dollars per dozen. The only thing he asks is you bring an egg carton with you. The only two expensive parts about eggs is water for the chickens and transportation for the eggs.

It was only two people) they ran out of fried chicken tenders which is what most everyone ordered and I had a mashed potato because I had just gotten gall bladder surgery. She gave me a small bowl of MICROWAVED instant mashed potatoes and they weren't even mixed all the way. It was the most horrendous shit ever. People were pissed when they said they ran out of chicken and it was basically empty after that, everyone walked out.
