Originally Shen's white feathers were because he was born albino and this caused his parents to neglect him. The Soothsayer was his nanny and took care of him most of his life. That's why he never hurts her

In the first movie zoo had to learn Kung Fu and gain the skills needed to become the Dragon Warrior. He had to train his body. Now in this one he’s a full-fledged Kung Fu master and is working on his inner peace. He learns focus, accepting who he is and where he came from and making peace with that. His mind was the focus. Kung Fu Panda 3 focuses on the spirit. Also hilarious moments where Po, his adopted dad and his biological dad have some conflicts as Po now has two dad’s who both love him dearly and both don’t like the idea of Po seeing the other as his dad.

One interesting thing is that Tai Lung was also black and white, as a snow leopard. If he had been a good boy and reflected on his initial rejection, rather than going bad, he may have become dragon warrior in time, and end up beating shen too.

Each film has a place in my heart and it's hard to tell which I love most though maybe 2 might be my top if only by a hair. The consistent messaging about accepting yourself and that sometimes your differences can be your strengths is amazing.

Shen tried to kill all the pandas to avoid being defeated by Po. But in doing so he made it so that Po wound up in the Valley of Peace where he was able to learn Kung Fu. Unknowingly prepping him for his destined battle with Shen.

2025-02-14 01:24:40 +0000 UTCMan I find it kinda beautiful that Shen chose to keep fighting Po at the end there after his weapon was defeated. It was different by that point. I'd even call it valiant. That was deliberately meeting his end for the sake of the gesture of standing defiant to his fate. Anyway I do find the first one to have the better premise/execution. This one suffered a bit from an overabundance of action sequences, leading each individual one to be less memorable. Nothing here was on par with the prison break, bridge fight, dumpling training, etc. It was very well put together, just not as clean and focused. They did away with a lot of the negative space composition shots they used in the first too so the movie looked a bit more standard. Still, Shen hard carries with his scenes. And I agree that the mini-antag wolf guy is supremely cute and deserved better.
