I think they starved and dehydreted him in prison so he could not do much even if something happend, just to be safe. That would explain how weak he was at that arc.

2025-02-20 14:38:07 +0000 UTCTrue, but then, the only ones we know for sure did use haki are Luffy, Garp,Hawk-eye and probably Jozu, the diamond guy who blocked Hawk-eyes attack. There probably was haki flying around but if we consider the powerscaling in-universe to be consistent (which of course isn’t a given) then several people barely used the true scope of their strength. Whitebeard could probably have killed almost everyone there without too much effort, and the same goes for the admirals if Punk Hazard is any indication. We know the more powerful marines use haki, we know what happens when two truly powerful haki users truly clash directly. I have to assume that the fact that anyone survived is an understanding on both sides that this was a mutually assured destruction type deal, which is why both Sengoku and Whitebeard spent most of the battle standing still and staring at each other.

2025-02-20 09:16:54 +0000 UTCI know its probably just post hoc justification, but i always imagined that the navy were prioritizing the spectacle of the execution and gathered in soldiers with that in mind, and therefore the admirals were hobbled in their use of powers and haki to avoid incidental catastrophic friendly fire. The pirates responded in kind, in part to make a statement, in part because every one insisted on helping, and in part because Whitebeard was a humanitarian and preferred to limit total casualties, even at the risk to his own men. So when Sengoku punched Luffy, he was limiting himself and not using haki, not understanding his resilience.
