I find it disappointing that there have been trans characters in One Piece for a while (Ivankov and Morley are the 2 biggest in the story), but Funimation chooses to ignore their existence just to push a more recent, cisgender, character as being the 1st. It's all just performative and proves they don't actually care about the representation, they just want to be celebrated for it.

It's kanji is Setsu - Unskilled / Sha - meaning Person. Sessha I believe can also be the pronoun used for a kind of shrine. Kiku using 'Sessha' and all others using 'de-gozzaru' are references to Kenshin and how politely but informally he talks. I know the incendiary bomb about bringing up that mangaka but Oda was still one of his editors for the Ruronini Kenshin manga and became close friends.

It helps to have a protagonist whose entire thing is accepting people, unquestioningly, for who they are or want to be. You can't have a transphobic One Piece while Luffy is our protagonist.
