I think she was testing him. Immediately before that he said he didn’t know anything and she assumed amnesia. So she tested him by saying “hello my name is hitler” and he was like “oh that’s a nice name! :3” This show really leaves the hand holding of anime, the play by play being explained to you by characters or flashbacks, out of the equation

A lot of people hate Subaru… My praise for his character writing doesn’t have much to do with the perception the wider audience has with him… The majority of people just stop at how they feel about a character, they don’t bother to analyze if the character is well-written or not beyond their personal feelings towards it.

Re:Zero is one of the great Isekai due to the fact that... the focus of the story is not the really fantasy, the adventure or the battles.... but rather the mystery, is the one thing that makes it truly unique. Subaru is also another thing that sets this anime apart, he is a really complex and realized character, he's up there alongside Rudeus Greyrat. I consider Re:Zero to be in the Olimpus of the Isekai that are masterpieces of their Genre.... alongside Mushoku Tensei and Konosuba (Tanya gets close but isn't quite there in my opinion).

Part of what makes this series so enjoyable, at least for me, is watching him grow as a person when his flaws are exploited by the world around him. It's a fresh take on an isekai protagonist, a type of character usually rewarded for every thing they do, flaws and all.

He is not the typical anime mc but this makes it different. Not in my all time favorites but still a great show. (didnt watched s3 yet).

I don't really know how I feel regarding Subaru's personality. On one hand, I want to say that his constant optimism and energy feel annoying and a forced way to hide his anxiety, but on the other hand his character is extremely well written when he drops his facade.

The main character has an ability were he gets stuck in a time loop whenever a death or catastrophe happens until he is able to stop it. This all comes to a head when he is framed, using his power to try and save the victim he is instead sent back in time over 30 years to his grade school days 1 month before a classmate of his went missing. It’s a damn good show and the mystery and twist is one of my all time favorites

This is similar to Mushoku in that the MC is a flawed character and not a blank slate self insert like most isekai. Please give him a chance, I would be willing to bet a lot that you will really enjoy watching his character progression, and how he acts, especially early on, makes a lot of sense once you get further in and learn more about him.

He's got the kind of typical light novel snark, but aside from that he'll make you think sometimes and for a show with little else on offer, that's exactly what you want. And yes, cringe characters are good writing. I don't even think he is one, but anime fans seem to have some thin skin when it comes to that.

But yes, I'm glad someone brought up the heavy lean towards sub reactions online because sub elitists harass reactors who do dubs. Many such cases. Dubs are better for people who enjoy listening to videos and reactions as opposed to having their eyes glued to the screen (me lol) idk what some mean by having an issue finding sub reactions since that's MOST of the content available. Just looking up any commonly reacted to anime you will barely find any dub reactions, or reactions that didn't switch to sub after hate comments. Heck even reactions where they are watching sub but provide the dub version in the editing for ease of viewing will get hate. All that said though, I'm sure that is not the reason why Alicia chose sub. I haven't been here for long but I'm pretty sure she would choose to watch however she wanted to and would simply eviscerate naysayers

I enjoyed this series when I first watched it, but I got a whole lot more entertainment out of it the second go through. It’s one of my top five (serious) Isekai along with Overlord, The Eminence in Shadow, Tanya the Evil and Gate. Subaru is a protagonist starts off cringe, but over time and after going through a veritable parade of trauma becomes much more tolerable and more quirky than cringe. I’m hyped for more!

He is in a completley new world with no skills, no knowledge of the culture and no powers outside of return by death. He is so out of his league and he will stumble a lot, that's just natural. And he suffers so much because of it. And he grows SO much because of everything he experiences. I think a lot of people don't like him also because he is very much like a lot of anime fans who are watching the show lol. They don't want to see that ugly side of themselves so they reject him.

Media literacy of the show in hindsight, and/or from people who've seen a ton of different anime, do tend to make that a bit easy to forget. I can't tell you how many friends I've warned off of watching Re:Zero *yet*, as they'd barely seen any other anime, prior. Which, like, yes, is gatekeeping, but just me recommending some other things to watch first. Like how you don't *need* to watch prior movies to appreciate some of the golden age marvel movie stuff, but I'd still *recommend* it, as it's just not as fun when stuff goes over your head, and so you can't always appreciate things without that context. Granted, I'll put up with a LOT more than most, after a few tens of thousands of hours of anime, so I'm always nervous about whether those who are newer to the hobby can appreciate certain shows. Some, I'm surprised by: Dandadan, for example, I was not expecting to translate as well as it did for them, which is very neat. Others, though, like Re:Zero, I do kinda feel super nervous about sharing until I know someone has at least seen some anime (particularly a few isekai anime), and kinda learned the rules and conventions that Re:Zero is built around subverting, deconstructing, et cetera. As always, context is important! Plenty of shows I'd tried watched earlier on in life were impossible for me to sit through until years later, just as plenty I'd watched earlier are things I'd honestly kinda scoff at, nowadays. Kill la Kill, for example, I was put off of until I "got it", later on, after getting a better read on the fact that it's *deliberately* ridiculous for the sake of parody and subversive spectacle, whereas something like, say, Sword Art Online? Oof. I couldn't rewatch that, nowadays. Especially when the Abridged is sooooooooooooooooooooo unironically great. ...I just meant to type a "yaaas, exactly that, yo." How TF does Re:Zero keep compelling the ramble like that, lol.

But people just want to see themselves in some overpowered Mary Sue, or the goodest mcGoodboy, or whatever else, instead of... well, an *actual* awkward AF shut-in, who's pretty much starting off as a useless idiot with a hero complex that the universe has to literally prevent from getting killed until he finally learns from his mistakes. But like... it's a sloooow process, and Re:Zero unfortunately gets dismissed as edgy spectacle, as it really doesn't hold your hand with constant flashbacks, internal dialogue, and exposition. So casual watching leads to a *lot* of people paying half-attention and just walking away with "yeah, so the loud cringe dude died a bunch and then it ended," and like... it's about the CATHARSIS of seeing ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! To be fair, it's a TERRIBLE show to try and watch without, like, the media literacy to recognize that it's a deconstruction of the genre from the onset, which is half of *why* Subaru is so flippant to begin with, but... well, whatever. The writing is spectacularly good, particularly later story arcs, and I just hate that so many good stories get sidelined by people for superficial reasons that have them jumping to conclusions and making bad-faith assumptions about everything.

I have the opposite problem, myself-- so many reactors will watch dubbed stuff that either change key information in ways that are super distracting, or they'll watch dubs *without* subtitles and my hearing can't keep up. My only personal issue with dubs tends to be when localization makes a mess of things for no reason. Which Re:Zero mooostly avoids, as there's only three things, total, that bothered me at-all with the localization, and the VA work is pretty solid. Not perfect, but certainly quite a good dub, in general. Oooother than those three specific details that honestly *do* bug me quite a lot. Still enjoy the dub, but I just hate seeing a 10/10 dragged down to a 9/10, is all. That being said, I'm also a huuuuge fan of the japanese VAs, as they seriously go above and beyond with certain scenes... Ah, solution I've done before, though, if this helps: play Re:Zero on a screen with subtitles maxed out, size-wise, and then put the reactor as a picture-in-picture thing with the two overlapping, and sync up the play time. It's not an elegant solution, but it's gotten me through some super quiet reactions where the lack of subtitles (or unreadable subtitles) had me otherwise totally lost. Or I also sometimes just isolate the reactor's audio and play them in a separate window along with the actual show, depending.

Better use of the OP/ED stuff in the original cut, but the director's cut is kinda waaaay better for catching people up on the series (as half of my rewatches were showing friends and/or re-binging it alongside reactions), as well as for reactors who skip intros or binge. Personally, I prefer the DC for reactions, if only because it means getting to see MORE of Re:Zero that much sooner with them. ^^ Definitely agree that it's a bit of a shame how the DC didn't really add any of the cut content back in, though. Pretty underwhelming and pointless.

And that development is reeeeeally not a quick process. I mean, hell, he's got more character arcs than most *shows*, altogether. Or, well, if we're looking at isekai, even Re:Zero's *background* characters have more development than plenty of isekai MCs. Can't be helped if it's not worth the investment for everyone, though. Still would recommend giving it another shot if your perspective changes at-all by knowing that Subaru's *meant* to be a bit insufferable, and that he *does* actually change in very real, meaningful ways as the series progresses. Buuut I've also the bias of hindsight, as someone who's read ahead and ended up seriously falling in love with some of the writing. Just felt I'd bring that up because my issue with Zenitsu was that the things I dislike *didn't* change or develop in any way, so I related a bit. No problem if it's still just not your jam, though! ^^;

Well duh, Subaru at his worst is in Arc 3 but he was a little shit from the begining, that's what makes his character arc so compelling and the reason the fanbase loves late-story Subaru so much. If you don't see him at his most "entitled incel" moments then you won't enjoy the "Hero of Priestella" or "The Wollachian Child of War" as much as you would otherwise.

The anime is also peak, but since it is a light novel adaptation there are of course cuts made.
